Since Modern Warfare 3 is the final Modern Warfare game, what's next in the Call of Duty series?

Hopefully the use of a new graphics engine that doesn't just make each new game a glorified Map Pack.

Postmodern Warfare. It's a game where you contemplate the meaning of contemporary artwork.

I feel as if CoD is dying. They will come up with something, but I honestly don't expect much.

Call of Duty is certainly not dying - it remains one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world, to this day. According to Wikipedia, it is the 7th most popular gaming franchise of all time, behind the likes of Mario, Pokémon, The Sims and Grand Theft Auto.
I do agree with JackOfClubs when he mentions how the Call of Duty games have the tendency to appear just as glorified map packs, because there isn't all that much change from game-to-game. Some would probably argue that the lack of change is done on purpose, so as to keep the audience that loved the game in the first place. They're probably a little worried that if they switch things up too much, they'll lose their fanbase. As much as anyone denies it, despite this lack of change, games like MW3 continue to sell at astounding rates. This is because Call of Duty is now renowned as the best franchise for first person shooters in warfare. It really doesn't matter what they release because people are going to want it anyway.
Like PrinceOfMadness, though, I would maybe like to see a return to World War 2 in greater detail and depth.

Black ops 2 which I'm looking forward to to be honest. I prefer Treyarch over Infinity Ward due to the fact that Treyarch actually care about their game post-release. Infinity Ward either don't care or are very dumb. Patching shotguns that are a challenge to get up to lvl 31 instead of patching dual FMG's that are better than most primaries...

It's been like that for a while. Once the yearly release schedule was announced by Kotick, it's been fucked up. You can't have a game go through a two year development period and expect it to be perfect. Look at what happened with MW2 and BLOPS. 2 year dev cycles, shit load of problems.

Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's good. There's plenty of bad games in the series you listed. It's all very subjective.

Good WW2 shooters like Red Orchestra are honestly a good return to what shooters used to be like. It would be awesome to see CoD take a turn to the Korean War or any of the pre-80s wars.

That's really beside the point I was making, though. I was merely stating that Call of Duty is one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world - I didn't say whether I thought the games were actually good or not. I entirely agree with you about games being subjective, but from a general viewpoint, there is no doubt that Call of Duty is incredibly successful, and will probably continue to be for a long while yet.

To add a little different perspective, I think they need to find a completely different focus- I mean this is the 3rd game in that series (cod 4, mw2, mw3). I dont think they need a mw4, so maybe they will get a completely different idea- they did the past, present, perhaps the future? I kinda like the sound of that- Call of Duty: Future Warfare, just an idea haha!

Considering Activision just bought the domain for Black Ops 2 (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/01/09/activision-picks-up-blackops2-com.aspx) you might be right.

I'm hearing more and more of this Black Ops 2 business, some even have it as they comment on my PS3. The buying of the domain looks pretty legit as well. Black Ops was the best title in the series in my opinion. It covered everything and had Zombies, which to this day I'm still addicted to and is the only reason I come back to it apart from the odd gun game or one in the chamber.

Personally, I wish they would go back to the old Call of Duty original. I miss the days of WW2 games like Medal of Honor (I didn't like the new one) (I jumped for joy when Frontline came out in the PS Store) I liked the first Modern Warfare but after that they have not just gone downhill, they've fallen off a cliff. I think they've milked the whole Modern Warfare series (including Black Ops) enough and it's about time someone made a new WW2 game like the old ones.
