People are generally just joking, do not think it's that serious, don't wish to believe you're really miserable or don't know what to do. The ability to help and comfort others is an innate ability not everyone can/will/does harness, it can be learned but there are still some people who simply feel the need and want to help.

The average person doesn't know what to say, even if they've been through it themselves. So they feel it's better to joke about it or ignore it than to potentially make it worse. And most are simply too focused on their own lives and obstacles to help someone else along, so they'd rather not get you started.

Personally, once someone shares their pain with me, I feel responsible for their happiness. And a lot of people feel that way, too. So they'd rather not.
