I'm considering taking some as a nootropic, but I'm not sure how much somnolence it causes...

Nootropic melatonin? It's pretty much completely sleep inducing. If you want nootropic, piracetam and those types might be what you're looking for.

Well, that's what I thought, but doesn't it have some antioxidant qualities (Melatonin, that is)?

It really depends on the person. Melatonin doesn't work for me.
It also depends your gender, age, weight, etc.

Antioxidants are generally scavengers of free radicals and oxidants. While they may improve general health, they don't really have highly acute effects. More powerful antioxidants include Vitamin E, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD, polyphenols and anthocyanins.

Nootropics tend to have direct neuropharmacological properties. It's also a fairly broad term. Some would consider amphetamine a nootropic, while others would not.

Melatonin is amazing. If you have tyrouble sleeping, I would HIGHLY reccomend it.
