The Cool Night
A man walks with his dog, a large German Shepherd. Though it was big, it wasn't exactly for protection, but certainly could provide it.
As they pass street after street, house after house, he wonders why one particular house always lays dormant, no life to inhabit it... Finally, in a spark of curiosity, he walks his dog to the house's front lawn, bordered by a chain-link fence. Most of the grass is dead, however there are a few patches that are still living, near strange, seemingly everlasting puddles that form.
As he walks into the yard, the man is surprised by the strange two-toed tracks he sees in the mud around the puddles. At first glance, they appear birdlike, but on closer examination, they most certainly aren't. Nothing in Chico, California produces tracks like these....
