As the title suggests. People can write their opinions on what they want from music, what their favorite music has in it, what should music include etc.
In short, say what is the main distinguishing feature in your favorite type of music :)
For me, at least, music has to evoke emotions and also thought. That is why the music has to be composed and played well and the lyrics have to be meaningful.
How about you others: What do you look for in music?

Whatever sounds good. I think that varies with what genre of music it is and how I'm feeling etc. Although I don't think you should expect or look for anything in a certain piece of music, because it'll narrow down what you can enjoy. Declaring to yourself, "I look for something upbeat" results in you missing out on thousands of potentially beautiful, or melancholic, or poetic pieces of music, and I think that defeats the point of looking for new music completely.

Music must make me happy. I tend to avoid grungy rock or angry sounding rap. Sad songs just don't do it for me.
I like to be able to dance and sign along. Cheesy pop music/dance music/techno are all perfect "good mood makers" for me, but I always keep my eyes open for anything catchy.

I look at the band first. If they dress or have a style I like
they most likely have the same style in music. Than if it's
metal what kind of metal, and what are the lyrics. Aristocratic
lyrics interest me mostly.

A good foundation of a beat, something with a catchy hook or catchy lyrical delivery. Something that's got good lyrics with meaning.

Something I haven't heard before.
I want art in my music. No artist is original but no artist is a plagiarist either. Hearing bands do the same fucking thing that ten thousand other bands have already done gets so stale. Freshness comes first, always. There has to be SOMETHING about them that I can get excited about.

If it sounds good to me, I'll listen to it. That's why I like so much music that varies over so many genres.

It differs depending on the genre.
Nü Metal: lyrics I can relate to, creative guitar part, use of turntables/similar shit, variety, minor key
Goth Metal: basically same as nü metal without the turntables.
Symphonic Metal: interesting orchestra part, complex arrangement, intellectually challenging lyrical themes, recurring themes in the orchestra, epic-ness
Classical: recurring theme, generally dissonant, although I love a good Beethoven string quartet, some sort of mathematical relationship in the music, opportunity to analyze it, other shit...
All genres: intelligent arrangement, something other than standard chord progressions, intellectuality.
Yes. I'm a nerd.

Instantly i listen for the beat, see if i can sit n listen or groove to it. I mostly listen to lyrics if i do end up liking the beat. I'm an R&B person so i always listen for how good the vocals are. I like rap but nothing hardcore. Don't like the rap music that only talks about what they would do to a girl...It's atrocious when you make the whole Hip-Hop culture look sleezy.

Good beat, meaningful lyrics, good use of instruments (maybe a guitar solo or some cool riffs ;))

I like rock music that is upbeat. Bands like Simple Plan or Blink 182, that type of genre. No speed metal though, that's way too fast for me.

Bad instruments, bad beats, bad lyrics, shitty quality, bad music, too whiny to be whiny, improvised, sick, dirty and gritty.

Music to me has always been about relaxation. I dunno why, but I have never seen music in the get hyped up kind of way. I can get into loud music at parties, but I really prefer "soft" music. And I really prefer older music. Bob Dylan. James Taylor. But I also like newer stuff, like Ani DiFranco.
I am weird.

When I listen to a song I imagine how it would sound played live or I imagine me playing it live and if imagination looks cool than itll probly be a good song in my books.
I like solos but if no solos a great lyrics and rythem section can be good.
I love the drumming of RUSH and KISS.
I like something where in a break of other instruments/vocals you'll hear this epic drum beat to tie it over.

Not fussy about the genre. Has to have a meaning of sorts, good beat and sound unique.
