“If they are automatically switching to another language, [the monitor] will gently tap them on the shoulder — not on the head — to tell them, ‘Remember, we speak French. It’s good for you.’

“It will be enough to deliver a clear message that French must be spoken, and when we speak it often, we become very good at it.”

Le facepalm. >.<

It will probably be difficult to enforce. Just like those "no texting in class" policies.

that's incredibly stupid, but no more stupid than any of quebec's other ridiculously stupid language laws.

I don't find it that bad... I mean, yeah a little silly that they're enforcing it, but I wouldn't mind it. I like new languages. :P

Funny because I remember my whole class bitching in college about an English teacher that wouldn't let us speak French in her class even during break.

Just another kneejerk reaction borne by language purists and redneck pure-laine Québécois' linguistic insecurities. We're doing the exact same thing with English that the French did with Occitan and the English with Welsh.

I'm all for greater provincial autonomy inside the federation, but discouraging other languages is going too far.

That's like forcing mexicans to speak English...Or is it. Hmm
