Hi, guys. My name is Kass, I've posted on here maybe, oh, once before? Haha, and I decided today that I'd try to become a bit more active. So, here goes!

I'm a huge fan of poetry, and self expression through words and images. I've recently started making short films and I've been taking a lot of classes on writing and poetry, and I stumbled upon an idea.. Why don't I mix the two? So, I've tried. And I thought, 'Hey?! Why don't I try to share my ideas with other creative kids?!' I know its not like hundreds of other people don't make creative videos or write poems, but it's cool to share.

I thought maybe, I'll post one or two poems in this first post, and then link you guys to my tumblr? I'd love to maybe get some feed back and generate a little discussion about poetry, writing styles, writing voice, etc.

Here goes nothing:

Haiku

Bustling with life

Everyone blending as one

Yet separated

~~~~
Dusty red sand dunes
Like cinnamon on oatmeal
Sand drifts in the wind
~~~~

Sometimes I pretend

That the true meaning of life

Is reality

Haiku

is one of the 'Poetry Videos' I've been experimenting with. I'm waiting for my Canon 60D to be fixed before I start uploading more.. But I'm pretty excited. I'd love to get some input, too. Thanks for reading, guys. If you'd like to read more, I've posted a whole anthology on my tumblr: http://ksndr269.tumblr.com/poetry

Nonsense poems are rarely seen! Nice job. :)

Remember, a limerick, by definition, has very specific metre; typically composed of consistent anapaest or amphibrach. Are you familiar with music? Think of it as triplets where sometimes every second note is accented and sometimes every third (and other times every first, which would make it a dactyl). So it's not just the rhyme scheme (AABBA), but the rhythm as well.

Experimenting with rhythm is lots of fun. Haiku poems, like yours above, are good to practice because they constrain what you can get away with, forcing you to be creative. Same thing with abiding various rhythms in a poem.

In fact, you can think of a limerick much like a haiku, if it helps you to think of it in terms of syllables; except instead of 5, 7, 5, you have 9, 9, 5, 5, 9. Sometimes the 9 syllable lines can be 10 or even 8, instead; as long as the triplet feel is maintained. Going to 11 or 7, however, is a bit of a stretch and the poem probably won't sound much like a limerick any more.

In haiku the metre is free and you can do anything you'd like, whereas limericks are typically more strict. :P

Example, observe these two beginning lines and determine which one abides by the rhythm more:

"I have three Dachshunds, and one hound,
they bark at every mention of sound."

or (the capitalized syllables are the masculine ones):

"i HAVE three dachSHUNDS, and one HOUND,
they BARK at each MENtion of SOUND."

And the youtube video you posted was very well done. I got a kick out of the "though sometimes philosophy is fiction" line. Very cool, descriptive poetry; and the video adds a creative touch. I also really liked, "I never listen to it though." as the screen goes black.

I look forward to reading (and seeing) more!

I really appreciate your feed back on my limericks. I feel utterly lost when I try writing them, because they are tricky little buggers. I just thought I'd give it a go, but it does make more sense now that you've compared it to music. I'm not very good at rhythm scheming though anyways haha..

Thank you so much, though. :) And yes, I'm quite judgmental of some philosophy haha. I'm glad you liked that last bit though, with the last line as the screen goes black, I was trying to portray my ignorance. :3

Again, thank you. I hope to continue posting as I write more!
