Recently, I have begun using GIMP. I do not have much experience with it, at least compared to my knowledge in Photoshop.
So, prices aside, which would you recommend? Is there any one thing that makes one better than the other?

I'd recommend photoshop, disregarding prices. I don't have much experience with it, but the work I have done with it for images for websites have turned out decent considering I am horrid at art.

What don't you like about it compared to GIMP? I know its probably easier to use, but is there anything else you don't like about GIMP?

Mainly just easier to use, but I became accustomed to photoshop. So I'm sure someone who started with GIMP is probably going to believe that's easier.

I prefer Photoshop, but GIMP isn't that bad once you learn how to use it.

The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have a dedicated blending options window, I think...

Photoshop is more userfriendly. But once you learn what you're doing, GIMP is really close to Photoshop, just ask Josh.

GIMP, mostly because it's open source.

Plus, I rarely do art, so installing such a costly and huge program on my computer would be pointless. Sure, PS has a nice GUI and is quite easy to use, but GIMP works quite well once you get the hang of it.
Plus, since GIMP is open source, you can write your own plugins to suit your needs. I've never done it, but it sounds handy.

Photoshop looks more friendly to me but it's expensive and requires lots of space while GIMP is totally free and just needs more time to realize what to do. So my choice is GIMP.
In fact there is such program like GIMPshop which is made specially for people who would like to use an open source with friendly interface. There are plenty of websites with gimpshop around in google, I found one of these web sites on Yahoo answers, the domain looks strange but whatever? it's here photoshop free download (http://photoshopfreedownload.net/), the advantage of the website I found is that there's FAQ and users' reviews while on the official web site there is just link to download.

I want to emphasise that the link I provided leads to GIMPshop, totally free program, I don't spread around a cracked copies of software which is not free.

I don't mind how user friendly or not it is, I just wanted to know if there was anything Photoshop could do much better than it could.

Photoshop is the golden standard, always.

Photoshop is the golden standard, always.

Neither of these are helpful. Saying its good is meaningless. I you don't really know about the differences, why post?

Gimp's only advantage is that it's opensource and is a freeware, as well as light on older computers. Otherwise, it is the same as Photoshop in every other aspects I can think of. But Photoshop is more professional in its approach. It's much easier to get use to. Gimp has a difficult learning curve, and it will take time to get hang of it. Even those who are used to Photoshop will find it difficult.

If you are a kid looking for free image processing software where you can do stuff, Gimp is the thing. Don't waste a dime on Photoshop, if you are not a professional user.

Most of us got the bootlegged version of it. But now, I have shifted to Gimp(since I am using Linux now)

I'm no professional, but the price isn't concerning. (Offered as birthday + $400-$500 off b/c student discount), but if there isn't really any difference in its capabilites, then it's fine for me.

If you have it, then it's alright. Use it by all means. It's the best thing you can have, right now. We are talking about people in general. People who aren't willing to pay 700$+ for a piece of software.

If you can get Photoshop, then by all means, get it. Don't choose GIMP over Photoshop. :P

I've never been very good with GIMP (though I've never bothered to look up any tutorials for either program) but I use photoshop for most everything because I just know the program better and understand how to do much more with it. That being said though, I have more experience with GIMP. I've been using it longer, despite not being able to do much with it.

I've used both GIMP and Photoshop. I prefer Photoshop, but you can do almost anything in GIMP that you can in PS.

Photoshop all the way, if you can afford to keep up with it, or if you know how to get a ripped version. For beginners who want similar tools I suggest gimp.

Paint.net to me is free/open source, and closer to photoshop. I love it.

I say Photoshop, all the effects,
things you can do with a simple
white background, are magical.

Really, you can do just about everything with GIMP too.
