Is todays music really considered good? I don't think so. Country is pop, rock is pop, rap is a bunch of words that rhyme with no meaning, and metal hasn't been good since Tool. Is there anyone else out there that feels this way. Maybe I should write a bunch of words that rhyme and get rich.

I think you're not looking hard enough. Country and rock certainly aren't pop if you look in the right places (experimental rock, post-rock, art rock etc), underground / conscious hip hop is fucking amazing and there are a ton of good metal artists that just aren't well known enough.
Use last.fm and rateyourmusic.com. They're very useful in finding out about new artists and new genres.

Wow, really? There's plenty of great metal artists since Tool came onto the scene. Earth, Queens of the Stone Age, and Incubus just to name a few. Sign up at last.fm, use their scrobbler, and start branching out into other artists. Also check out deadpie's Metal guide (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=89971) as a good start.

I don't think you're listening to the words. Words are better than the sound, I think.

The words are just poetry. Music is about the sounds of the instruments/other devices used while recording. Words are literally the most useless thing in any song.

Well, I guess. It also works for people who listen to songs by Beethooven, Vivaldi, Mozart, etc. Ya know, no word songs.

There's also genres like ambient, drone, and post-rock that have no lyrics at all. All instrumental songs. They're just as powerful and conveying as Beethoven or Mozart.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, or ear in this case. I find a lot of new music great, not all of it, but some. It's all about opinions. There is still metal, there is still country, and there is pop; plenty of other good genres too. Symphonic, dubstep, ambient, jazz, heavy metal, death metal, Gothic, bluegrass, etc.; all kinds of good music, you just have to look. It's not like trying to find the holy grail.

And what exactly is considered an "old" album now? Something that came out in 2008?

I think you're just looking in all the wrong places. I personally think that all the really popular, mainstream music isn't very good (wow, I sound like a hipster). Like everyone else is saying, try Last.fm or Pandora Radio. I prefer Pandora but I can't use it since I don't live in America

Yes a 3 year old album is old. A 100 year old album is old too

No, it's not. Hell, I can't wait until someone calls an album released in the last month "old". 3 years is basically nothing. By 3 years time, everyone forgets that the album even exists.

Agreed to some extent. It always depends on mainstream popularity. If people like it, it gets so overplayed that none of the songs are appealing anymore. That's why albums that are three years old are considered "old" in most cases. Then after about three months when te artists next song is in mainstream radio, theist one gets played increasingly often, usually in between other singles and/or albums.

When most of the music you care about was made within the last decade. It's sorta like fashion in that sense. You listen to Pink Floyd, he listens to Rihanna or whatever. Obviously you guys are gonna have different ideas of what's "old".

How someone can hate this stuff is beyond my understanding. Even if you just "don't like it" you have to admit there's still a shit load of sincerity, musicianship, and talent in all of this.

And if you're a big Rush fan, maybe you should check out Porcupine Tree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxiLuoWgi34), which is an amazing progressive rock band.
People that say current music is shit are people who don't even give enough effort to actually look for something good.

There is still some good music, it just doesn't get the attention it desires. The only "rock" most teens listen to is either pop-indie or post-hardcore. I see this as a problem definitely, but you can't blame anyone but your peers who buy shitty music.

I personally don't like most of the shite that's played on the mainstream, top 40 stations. And I say most, because Katy Perry is amazing, as is some of the other stuff. But when 95% of the music is about nothing but casual sex and partying "cause we might not get tomorrow"... Really?
Now, I'm not going to say that all of today's music is shite because that's faaaar from the case. I love my artists, and I listen to things as varied as Florence + the Machine to Combichrist! New stuff is not automatically bad, you can't just lump it all together in a pile and call it a day. Nor is mainstream automatically "mindless noise".

Before I saw the videos, I was really worried that you were talking about pop music having sincerity and musicianship...which it doesn't.
Also, like others have said, you're exaggerating. There are plenty of good groups out there these days. Maybe not as many as back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, but there's still a fair amount.
And I just realized how pointless this post is. So here's a kitty

A fair amount? There are plenty of good bands. We don't need any of this "the music from the past is better" elitism because it's not true. If you don't believe me, go onto last.fm and just look around.

Cease this 'music was better in the 80's' elitist nonsense and actually spend the time looking for good bands. Last.fm really does help.

As far as mainstream goes, there are much, much fewer good bands than there were in the 70s. I'm not saying the past's music is better; I don't think that. The only music from then I listen to is stuff like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. However, mainstream music back then was more musical than mainstream music today.

There's no problem in liking mainstream music (though I can not see that going over well with some in this thread). It's not overall the BEST music out there, but it's out there anyway. No harm in liking it, no harm in not liking it.
