So today was my first day on a new college course, I was freaking out, and wanted to self harm, so I decided to use the elastic band thingy, my individual therapist for DBT told me that this doesn't count as self harm because it doesn't leave a mark, well I was using it today, and I got home and realised that I have marks still from 6/7 hours ago. I don't know if this counts as self harm or not, I'm freaking out, i'm crying in case it is and i've messed up over a month of carefully distracting myself and avoiding any possibly triggering situations, and i'm also crying because if it isn't then that means I still have to struggle through this, and I can't take a few days 'out' of recovery.
Help. :confused::(

Well I've never counted it as self harm and I've done that for a long time. Although it leaves slight marks Its stopped me from doing worse like cutting and things so i don't count it however other people may count it as the same could be said for other things. You were doing it as prevention so i wouldn't count it personally.

I've left marks for days before after using an elastic band. I remember my counsellor just kind of looking at it like O.o What the hell where you doing with it O.o But no, I wouldn't count it. It wasn't really intentional harm was it? It's defintely the lesser of two evils :)

I don't think you need to worry at all! It only counts as harm if thats how you intended it...and you didn't. You've been strong for over a month and you haven't messed it up, don't worry :)
