What is your favorite song from a musical?

Mine's I'll Cover You (reprise) from RENT

Sad that there isn't a video of the performance because it was staggering.

Sorry. Theatre geek can't help this post.

Sweeney's a hard musical to choose just one song from. They've all got different qualities to them. Raw emotion and anger, comic relief, stunningly-gorgeous solos, and the typical eerily-pretty brooding duet. I have to choose Epiphany if we're talking George Hearn. If just the Burton film version, I'd have to rethink my choice. Though I do love Depp's version.

It counts in my book. asdfjkl; Sarah Brightman.

I usually don't mention Wicked even though I've seen it live more than any other musical, because I'm your cliché "allergic to popular things" type. I love Wicked, but I've weaned myself off of it for that reason. And if I hear Popular used one more time in an audition I will shoot myself in the head. But here we have my favourite Elphaba (Idina fangirls need to stop being so biased, Stephanie is the shit. I love Idina's Maureen though) singing the song that's always left me breathless every time I've seen this musical.

Am I the only one who takes this musical as a serious musical, in parody form? I love it not for the midnight shows, but for the musical itself. Imagine that. Really though, if it wasn't Science Fiction Double Feature, I wouldn't mention any of the songs. I would probably skip to Shock Treatment and say Lullaby.

It would be a crime to not mention RENT. Especially since everything RENT stands for relates to my live at some point, lol. Homosexuality, poverty, STDs, drug abuse. I can't see there being a way I could not like RENT. Film again because It's the best quality with Adam Pascal. I love the rest of them but One Song Glory... bah. Perfection. Other contenders were Without You and La Vie Boheme.

It would also be impossible for me to mention Phantom. But I wasn't going to originally because I couldn't pick a song. Mmm. Well. Robert already mentioned Music of the Night and even though you'd imagine, what, being a soprano and having used Think of Me and Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again about a thousand times in auditions and performances that I'd say those, but no, Point of No Return is the one I'm mentioning. Not as many people say that one, but that's not the only reason I'm choosing it. My dad proposed to my mum with All I Ask of You. So I can't choose that one either because ever since I found that out it's felt awkward, ha.

Strangely both breaking the streak and also continuing it, I found this stunning duet that I found from my Soprano's Anthology. I was lucky enough for my vocal coach to have chosen to have me work on it. Breaking the streak because this is a better example of typical theatre than what I usually like, but it also keeps with my general taste in musicals, heh.

Okay, I'll have to apologize a second time just to make up for this one. Sorry. But in my defense, this was THE musical I grew up on. I had this on VHS as a kid and jumped at the chance when my school choir was doing this. So really, you can't blame me, Grizabella was my first-ever role in anything (even if it was just singing the part). I have a music box that plays this. Oh yeah, and my cat is named after Mr. Mistofelees. I love me some Andrew Lloyd-Weber.

Cell Block Tango and We Both Reached For The Gun both easily come to mind as some of my favorites, especially in terms of fun, enjoyable songs to listen to.

In terms of the meaning of the song to the musical though...

No Good Deed does a great job at showing Elphaba's change in character. I don't actually love the song, but I think it's singularly one of the best scenes in the play. It really actually makes me wish the musical Elphaba was more similar to the book version of her, going completely bonkers with grief and frustration til finally the horrendous and pathetic charade she calls a life ends.

So many great musicals! I would say One Day More from Les Miserables is pretty cool, and alot of songs from that musical. All I ask of you from Phantom of the Opera as well.

I fucking love that song, but I like Epiphany (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtFOgfpZIyU) better.

Anything from Sweeney Todd or Rent, I love.

You speak the truth. Epiphany is quite possibly my favorite as well, but it's hard to choose between these two for me. They're pretty much all awesome.
