Hi Guys.
Just wondering what kind of anti virus software you use and what you think of it.
I use AVG 2010 and I have never looked back. Best thing going. It has a link scanner for detecting unsafe websites, different priority scanning modes and a performance analyser. 10/10

I've had Norton for a while on my PC, and never had a problem.
For my laptop (mac), I put the 2011 Kaspersky 90 day trial on and has worked fine.

Before I bought my toshiba laptop, which I have now, I had a Dell Inspiron. PC World gave us Norton 360 at a reduced price. Foolishly, we took the up on the deal. It didn't do half the things that AVG does and when we scanned the computer it slowed it to a snails pace. AVG is also much better value. About £50 for a 2 year subscription

I have always used AVG free. The latest version is absolutely brilliant.

Psssh, we Linux users don't need a seperate antivirus :P
It's all built in(SELinux Policy Kit, which prevents viruses from doing malicious stuff)
On my laptop I rarely download programs, so the (half-functioning) trial version of McAfee works.
I mistrust Kaspersky and Norton.

On Windows, McAfee. On openSUSE, AVG for Linux.

This is the same mindset mac users have. An operating system itself doesn't protect you from all viruses. :) Even if it has built in tools. Neither do anti-virus programs.

Ah, but Linux's anti-virus things actually work. Besides, I get all my software from the official repos anyways, so unless those get hacked, I'll be fine.

I use ESET NOD 32 on my laptop, and AVAST! Antivirus on my desktop.
Both are equally as good programs

Avast! all the way :P I've been with Avast! for a really long time now. Many years, and I've never had a problem with viruses, though this is probably because I can usually tell what isn't safe to download/run. Antivirus is just part pf the system. The other half is using the computer in a smart way.

The only thing that annoys me with Avast! is the notification for the virus signature database update where it says "Avast! Virus signature database has been updated". Its annoying if you have your speakers up loud.
That isn't anything to complain about though

Glad to see some ESET users here.
I use ESET 5 on literally every system I can get my hands on, that either I own or my family owns.

You can change around with the settings a bit so it doesn't do that. Silent/Gaming Mode I think it's called.
Anywho, a friend of mine ( My hairdresser, actually, :p ) recommended avast! to us and we've haven't renewed our Norton subscription is years.
I love it. :D

Avira. I love Avira, great program and protects my computer. Updates alot but doesn't slow down the computer at all. When I took my computer in last time, I had AVG and got a virus. He said that he hates AVG and him and some other of his computer parners recommend Avira. So he got that for me and it is a lot better than AVG. So I recommend AVIRA

Avast!
no other reason for anything else. it's free, very light on resources, and you can easily find promotions that have the full version license for a year for free...
I used to use bitdefender and it was badass, but it's expensive.

Anyone with Avast! is smart enough to be in this section

Not necessarily. Some simply prefer it for whatever reason.

Says you. I could say anyone using Novell AppArmor(yes, it's not really an anti-virus, but you get my point) is smart enough to be in this section.
Anyone with bitdefender is a rich douchebag
...or they just have the money for it.

You're being extremely stereotypical here. There is no way that you could have tried every other anti-virus software. If you say you did, I would have to reference the 3rd quote from your post. I find that SELinux and AppArmor work quite well, as I try to stick with the official openSUSE repositories. The folks there check for viruses and stuff(And besides, IMHO, if you use the closed-source repos, you suck :P).

Norton: I recommend it to clients for an easy to use anti-virus if they have comcast internet. It's a "premier" suite and it's free. It's also a name they know and trust. I even put it on my father's computer, just to keep him out of my hair. As per your stereotype . 4 years computer sciences. Competed at the national level for computer repair. A+, Sec+ and Net+ certified.
Avast! My friend who know's nothing about computer's has Avast! So yet again, point null
Bitdefender. Never used it, only seen it a few times and it works, so what's wrong with spending money if you have it.
Anything else.....
Avira on my netbook (Low impact. Barely ever scans, doesn't slow boot-up times)
McAfee Enterprise edition on my works computers ,why? Easy to use policy control, easy mass updates.
AVG Free, ,Not using it anymore because it's blatantly advertisement ridden.
Microsoft Security Essentials. It works, it's free and it's from a company that everyone knows.
Need my list to go on?

Look, SELinux is not a virus scanner. Granted, you could modify it to become one, but that is not what I am talking about.
SELinux is merely a policy generator, meaning it sets different permissions for different types of programs. It's like a pre-virus scanner, if you will.
For example, if a program running as root tries to remove all files from the root directory, SELinux blocks that.
If you really must have a virus scanner, you can download it from the proprietary repositories, but that's what the uncool people do :P
Or, you can go without any virus scanner at all. Know how? Be sensible.
