View Full Version : Do you fit the stereotype?

Basically its a common theory that having gone through certain things or behaving in certain ways puts people at hugher risk of self harm. And out of interest, I just wondered how many of us fit these categories.
-abuse (sexual/physical/mental)
-neglect
-low self esteem
-high achieving
-traumatic event ie. Loss of a loved one
-high alcohol intake
-high drugs use
-high rate of smoking
-mental illness
-parental mental illness
-parental substance abuse
-having a friend who self harms
I have a teacher at school who just spoke to me about this the other day, and how in her opinion I fit quite a few. So yeah, do any of you?

It's not a stereotype as much as it is a risk factor. A stereotype would be like: People who cut themselves wear black all the time and act like they hate everyone.
I'll put the ones that apply in bold and green and cross out the ones that don't.
-sexual abuse
-physical abuse
-mental abuse
-neglect
-low self esteem
-high achieving
-traumatic event
[-]-high alcohol intake
-high drugs use
-high rate of smoking[/-]
-mental illness
-parental mental illness
-parental substance abuse
-having a friend who self harms
(Having friends who self-harm doesn't really effect me at all. I started hurting myself in kindergarten and I cut when I was 7-9, my friends only started last year. I'm trying my best to help them recover, though. ^_^)

I supposed I don't fit many of the categories. I HAD a friend who self-harmed. But I had done it before I found out. Still, I started it again recently, so... Not sure if she was a 'factor' in my relapse or not.
Also, I have ADD and maybe social anxiety... I counted it as mental illness, even though I normally don't. The anxiety hurts me a lot more than the ADD does.

Funny, I would have said my self harm was stupid and really I had no reason to do it but looking at this has made me realise I wasn't just being weak, I have been through a lot... thank you!

I feel like the odd one out. I don't do any drugs or smoke. Neither I nor my parents have been diagnosed with any mental illness. I don't have any friends who self harm. I am not abused in any way and my self-esteem is fine. I do make all A's in school so I guess that might count as high achieving. (I also qualified for MENSA, scoring in the 98th percentile on the admissions test.)

I bolded the ones I fit into. I put a question mark against the first 2 because I'm still not sure. For abuse, it would have been mental, but I'm still not even sure. For neglect, I'm also not sure.

Ergh, I hate self-harm stereotypes. I'm a middle class only child that goes to a private school in the suburbs. No guyliner, no sexual abuse, no binge drinking. Everyone has their shit, some people deal with it differently. This isn't an attack on you, just an overall rant FYI.
