I have noticed that people use the rep system to neg rep people that have opposing views. (I'm talking about me.) A lot of people have used it in a neglectful manner, I call it abusing it. I'm suggesting maybe do away with the entire system. I know it sounds crazy, but many people who have opposing views as me has abused it and used it to bring down my rep which I think is immature.

This is a terrible idea, man. I'd take it down before someone with large rep sees you...

I did this once, it was not a good idea. I'm just wanting to warn you. Good luck, man.

They can neg rep me all they want. It's just going to make my case even more stronger for the mods.

Dude..... alright. Good luck. I just think that they aren't going to because a few people are abusing it.

PM an admin if you think a neg rep was unfair.

You could disable rep if it bothers you that much. Or pm an admin like Jess says.
Don't see the big deal with negative rep anyways...not like anyone gives a damn whether your bar is green or red.

Oh look, this thread again.
If you don't like one of your rep comments, go a head and report it to an admin. They will remove it at their discretion.
And besides, it's just a number.

They can neg rep me all they want. It's just going to make my case even more stronger for the mods.
Unlikely. Rep means nothing. Especially not to the staff.

I agree that some people use it in a manner of just plain and simple idot like ness, like I got A neg rep with this in the comment :) ...... how is that fair?

Anyway doing away with the whole system is not such a good idea but maybe a good appeal system would be a good idea

See I already got a neg rep from here. Basically anywhere I post I get a neg rep. Looks like I have a troll on my hands. And they use it because I have opposing political or religious views.

And now you have a +rep from this.

Why do people take it so seriously...

I'm sorry. but please you shouldn't take it seriously. as I said already, you can PM an admin to get rid of the unfair neg reps.

You can never get rid of your bad reputation.

When I say this, I don't mean the little red bars. I am talking about how people think of you. So, don't take it seriously, and if you really have a problem, go ask an admin, and don't take your VT problems public, or people will think you are a whiner. This won't go away.

OP, even if some people have neg-repped you simply because you have an opposing view-point, they have every right to. If you ask me, though, I think you get a lot of neg-rep just because you identify yourself as an easy target for irritation and complain about every bloody little thing. Quit being whiny, people will like you more, and we can all have a better time on the site.

i honestly dont pay attention to the rep stuff i dont understand what it is even for ive been from +27 to -17 n nothin has changed as far as i could tell at first i thought if your rep went to red instead of green that you were like on probabtion or somethin or on the verge of gettin in trouble to me the whole rep thing is stupid only cuz you could give good advice n not get good rep for it but like the OP said if someone dont like you they can give you -rep every chance they get just to be spiteful but yea aside from a stupid number n christmas lights on your profile it seems pretty pointless like i said i just ignore it n dont let it get to me n when i see someone gave me a bad rep for somethin stupid i just laugh bout it but i mean if it bugs you that much that people dont agree with your views or opinions (which they have every right not to agree with you just like they have every right to give you +,- or no rep at all) then ignore it or disable it if i read a post or comment from someone i dont worry bout what their christmas lights say i look at what they say in their post or comment

Just want to clarify, what is in bold is not true at all. Also, yea, it may be abused sometimes, but whining about it only makes things worse.

yea i realize that which is why before that i said "at first i thought" meanin when i joined the site i thought in my own head (didnt read or hear it anywhere) that the rep was like a behavior bar but again realized it wasnt when my rep dropped to -17 n i still had all the options i had when i first joined... i guess i worded it wrong which im sorry bout didnt mean it to sound like i was sayin it has any effect it was just my thought of what the site/staff used it for.

Not tryin to say they should or shouldnt cuz again i could care less about it i ignore it personally but if it has no meanin or effect on your account whats the point in it why not just get rid of it? again not whining or anything just askin a question as to why somethin that means nothin is on here

I'm suggesting maybe do away with the entire system.

Never going to happen.

It's rep, it means fuck all. The only benefit is that people tend to trust your answers a bit more when you have higher rep. That's really the only good thing about it. It's good motivation to post quality replies as well.

If you really care about rep, try focusing on posting things people will rep you for. There are some things you learn to never say on VT if you are going to feel all butthurt about people criticising you. You'll learn what all of them are in good time.

When you talk about posting things people will rep you for, to me this suggest I have to change or said person has to change to get rep. I mean if I say I belive that suicide is a selfish act then many disagree with this and I get de-rep just because I voice my views. This is more or less an annoying thing, and I mostly think this is what cybercode was getting at.

I think rep is only a good thing if you post threads and make posts that many people agree with.

But I will say I dont de-rep people for just a different view I look at the helpful-ness of the post. If i dont see the useful part of the post or if it is never going to work in any sinero then I may de-rep but I try not too do it to often

anyway this is just my 2 cents

I used to give out red rep all the night. :c

Now, I give rep out not very often. I give positive rep with advice to people who are making some dumb posts, and trolling. However, if they are actually trolling and its getting to the point where he has like..... 2 neg rep blocks, then.... yeah. I don't even try.

I also give pos rep out to people who has neg rep, like 1 block. I feel sorry for them.

So, OP, not everyone abuses the rep system in a bad way. For example, I believe I pos repped you because I know that you were going to get neg repped for this thread.

I've been neg-repped once, in 2010, for a post I made in ROTW. And I state similar and opposing views as well (for instance, I'm sure I've talked about my views on suicide many times, I've yet to be neg-repped for it though). It probably is also the way you say it. There are ways you can say things that will piss people off and ways to say it that'll just get people to reply and debate with you.

Again, if you really want rep, there's a way to get it. But if you're focusing on being yourself and being helpful in your own way, that's a different thing to do. You may also get rep by doing the latter, which, for instance, is the way I've gone about it, post what I want and end up getting some rep along with it, but if your aim is to get rep and not get neg-repped, that's how you're going to have to do it, by treading very carefully and being a people-pleaser. Which really isn't the point.
