Sooooo, I have a little problem with attempting to install any Linux distribution on the aforementioned laptop (I also have an issue on the desktop with Fedora insisting on using the Spanish dictionary on spell checker, but I'm sure I can solve that :P). Anyway, whenever I attempt to boot this laptop with a live CD-R or USB drive (all perfectly good bootable media; I've tested them with the desktop) I... Right, this spell checker is beyond a joke .

As I was saying (spell check is English now :P) ... I found that the laptop would refuse to advance from the first screen on booting (ISOLINUX Debian-2.8 (c) Peter Anvin etc., you all know what I'm on about). The BIOS doesn't have any relevant options, having changed the boot settings to boot from the correct media as required, and Google is useless, so I was wondering if you lot could help. Thanks in advance. +Rep and, more importantly, my eternal gratitude to anyone who can help!

When it gets to that point, try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1(or Ctrl+Alt+F2, etc). See if you get anything.
Although, that is wierd...:/

Do you mean you get to the boot screen and it just stays there? Try booting in verbose mode and see if it's actually doing something. Booting into any OS from a CD takes a while for me.

Telling the OP to "just drop it and use something else" is not a good solution, only a last resort.
Besides, it especially won't work if you only have software for one specific platform.
In addition, he said that it happens to any distro he tries. Meaning, he'll likely encounter the current issue again.

No, I don't get that far in. It gets to the screen with the isolinux copyright info, and a little flashing curser thing, and stays there. I've left it for about ten minutes, and it was going nowhere.

Thanks Thomas, I'll try that... Not too optimistic, but no matter.

Edit: Tried and failed :( any more suggestions?
