It is possible, but only for moderators. There'd be no point in regular users being able to 'ghost' in chat.

Messages from ghosted users come up as system messages, rather than normal messages, so no it wouldn't be too useful for members except to confuse the hell out of people :P

I guess, but if a user wanted to just read the conversation, and not have others know....

That would be useless. Unless, of course, your username shows up when you send a message, but then you might as well just keep it as visible.
And besides, the chat is done through another company, so we'd have to ask them. And they probably won't.
