So basically here we go:

At lunch breaks everyone in my year usually hangs out in groups having 'banter'.
Q1: How would I approach one of these groups? Sometimes I am in one, but it will move away and leave me on my own.

Q2: How do you befriend someone? This guy joined my school. He already knows most of the people here and is quite a player. He seems really cool and nice. He seems just like my friends I have. I have tried chatting with him on facebook and occasionally at school. He thinks I'm funny but also a bit weird. (my humour is bit 'weird') How can I make him think of me as normal?

thanks, bye!

1. try acting like one of the kids or start talking to them, like im in a prep group (:
2. tell the person you wanna take some time without them. dont act weird

The thing about social settings, is there is a high possibility that someone out there will be your friend. if you new, you should just be neutrally friendly and nice, and funny. That way, people will talk more. Dont be reserved but dont dish out your personality in one dose. it scares people, pretty easily. What you should do is sample all these people, and see how you fit the most. eventually you will find your niche :)

I want to take more time with him, not without, but I want to do it subtly not just "Hi can we be friends?" - that looks too keen.
