Ok people I am sick of my computers

My dad doesn't spend any money at all, he always takes second hand computers that were top of the line (10 years ago) and he doesn't notice how the local store we buy from has a monthly payment plan.

a few hours ago it took 15 minutes to open Firefox, that is totally unacceptable for my computers.

My question is how much money will I need to spend to have a computer of my standards which are:

Load up programs in under 30 seconds, HD video card, and not freeze up and give me that bullshit line of "Not Responding" when I try to open a word document.

Sound Quality and HDD space and cooling I don't really care about, just as much as is needed.

You may want to consider that because your dad buys these older computers, he maybe cannot afford newer, top-of-the-line computers that you want.
You have to be considerate of that, you know.

My computer is from 2006. It still works, sometimes faster than this 2011 laptop.
Then there's our 1998 PC, which still works pretty good. Sure, it's not as fast compared to today's machines, but it can still do quite a bit.

And you may be getting this "Not responding" stuff because the programs are so poorly written nowadays.

As for an estimate, this is what I think(I don't know very much, though):
Computer itself: ~ USD 150.00
HD Video Card: > USD 100.00
Microsoft Windows 7: > USD 175.00
...and then some...
That brings us up to....$420?

Like Matrix said, maybe your father cannot afford a top of the line computer.

If you want a *cheap* computer I assume you still have windows XP licenses. So you'll be using this.

Shovel 10 driveways and you'll be able to afford this yourself.

Here's the guide, building it is literally *putting together parts, it's a puzzle.*

Also, you might be locking up because you probably watch too much of...something... we all know what it is. Scan your computer for viruses, run the CCleaner program.

Just a heads up, the computer my father uses is this. You really don't need much.
Sony Vaio Laptop...Circa 1998

Athlon 64 944mhz
Ram: 256 megs.
Graphics, 8 megs.

Get work?

Or be happy with what you have. Your Dad isn't an auto teller.

he makes $7k in a month. He just decides to spend it on hot tubs, cars, home reno's and diet coke. Well I'll be working in the oil fields soon so I'll bbe making some sick cash, one week of work to buy a primo computer.

Well its his money to decide what to spend it on.

How much does he usually spend for computers? You can get some pretty good computers for a good price if you know how to search. My laptop was $300 and it handles most games pretty well and a few games that my desktop doesn't handle. You could get a very nice gaming desktop for around $800 depending on what you already have lying around.

So poor rich kids daddy won't buy him everything he wants?

So when you work then buy it yourself.

^ Eh, I don't think it's necessarily that. Ten years outdated, maybe I'm just used to having a father who's a PC gamer and software engineer but even being a little poorer than your typical middle class family he's never failed to replace a computer or just get a new, better one for no reason. If his dad isn't that stingy with his money but he's treating buying a new computer as such and his computer is as bad as he's saying it is, ask him, have a sit down with him. Make it your Christmas gift or something. Or yeah, earn the money for it. I can't imagine having a computer that slow. I feel so spoiled. XD

Rith It's more of the thing I think he's over exaggerating. If he performs routine maintenance it'll probably speed up. He might have a million programs set up for "On startup" that makes it seem like a slug.
I'm going to predict his specs,
Core 2 Duo: 2.6 ghz
Ram : 2gb-4gb
OS : Windows xp
Hard drive: 250gb Sata

Follow these steps to "Speed up your computer"

Run the program "Ccleaner" and clear out your temp files with this, then clean up the registry.

Next go to run: type in Msconfig, click on the startup tab and disable random programs such as AIM or Skype from starting up right away

Defragment your hard drive

Lastly run a malware bytes scan.
