I am doing a project where I have to make a magazine cover.

In the toolbox window there will be an "A" Icon. Click it, then click on the part of the image you want text on and then type. :)

Just a suggestion; paint.net works better for me than GIMP. Then I got photoshop and stopped using the freebies :P
