View Full Version : Painful Periods

Right over the last few months my periods have just been gradually getting more and more painful.
I've always had slight pain with my periods but lately it's been getting a lot worse. It's not just just before my period either, I get it for around 7 days just before and during, and then half way through my cycle I get bad ovulation pains for 3 or 4 days too. Ovulation pain is something that I have only noticed for about the last 8 or 9 months, and this is gradually getting worse too.
I've had my periods for 5 years so it's not like it's usual to have changes like this after so long. I'm going to the doctor with the intention of asking to be put on the contraceptive pill to try and stop these but i'm slightly worried that this shouldn't be happening.. Does this mean there's something wrong? Does anybody have any idea why this is happening?

My friend had this problem. She is now on the pill, because not only were they painful, but she also had them for months at a time.

Are your periods regular? It's only a small chance but it could be polycystic ovaries. That's the only thing I could think of. You're uterus might just be doing overtime. Have you changed your diet or anything?

Yeah they are.
I guess.. My diet changes pretty regularly. I have an eating disorder so.. I'm in a period of "recovery" at the moment. I'm eating more, but it tends to change pretty often.

it may be an infection (at worst) so don't worry, visit the doctors and they will tell you

Pretty sure infections don't cause painful periods, and i'm pretty sure there is a lot worse things it can be.

It doesn't seem you're getting any very direct answers...So let me try and help. I'm going to be doing some Pasting, only because I want to give helpful information without sounding silly.
For good measure, females can have many problems, such as ovarian cysts or various health issues that cause these pains such as endometriosis which (and I'm going to paste this) is:
Endometriosis is a painful, chronic disease that affects at least 6.3 million women and girls in the U.S., 1 million in Canada, and millions more worldwide. It occurs when tissue like that which lines the uterus (tissue called the endometrium) is found outside the uterus -- usually in the abdomen on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and ligaments that support the uterus; the area between the vagina and rectum; the outer surface of the uterus; and the lining of the pelvic cavity. Other sites for these endometrial growths may include the bladder, bowel, vagina, cervix, vulva, and in abdominal surgical scars. Less commonly they are found in the lung, arm, thigh, and other locations.
This disease causes bad pain during and around your period and can cause problems with baring children (my mother has/had this). Symptoms also include pain with sex, painful urination when you are on your period, and such. I'm making a good point of this only because I really want you to go see a gynecologist immediately. I don't want to scare you, but it worries me when you say you have pains like that. I'm not sure if they have Planned Parenthoods in England, but maybe find yourself a place similar if you can't get to a doctor. It's important that you do. They can tell you exactly what's wrong, and it's possibly nothing. If it is nothing (which I'm hoping it is) then they can prescribe you birth control pills, which will help your pains lessen or just go away completely.
Like I said, not meaning to scare you. But you need to see a doctor. You're sexually active now anyways, I'm sure, and once you become sexually active you should see a gynecologist just to make sure you're all nice and together.

Thanks Lexi.
I am going to the doctor so yeah hopefully they'll check for things like that, I have read about that before. I need to go to my GP for stuff to do with my ED anyway sometime next week, so i'll ask her about this at the same time.
My mum's also a GP but she seems to think I should just be prescribed the pill and be done with it..

Well, I wont really be any help.. D:
My first thought was actually that it might be because of your ED.. But it's best if you talk to your doctor.
Hope it's not something too serious.

Okay, I may not be much help but could it just be something that occurs naturally? I've had mine for eight years now and only in the past year or so have I ever started feeling any sort of pain on mine that's gotten worse after awhile. If it's unbearable or close to the sort, then it could be a problem but there might be the chance that it's just something that happens. Then again, I'm not exactly an expert. ._.
See your GP and check and even if it's not something serious, they're obviously the person to go to for ideas on how to make it lesser. The pill may help 'cause I've been on it before.
Sorry if this didn't help too much, just thought I'd throw it out there.

Well, EDs can affect basically everything about your body and considering that your periods can stop with an ED, it wouldn't be surprising if that was what's affecting them. From what I've learned, your body tends to react in strange ways to change, especially when recovering from an ED. It could be just a shock to your system and this is how it feels like handling it.
Totally guessing but it might be possible.

Well your periods sometimes stop with EDs because your eating is messing up with your hormones. I'm guessing period pains has a bit to do with hormones too, so i'm guessing theoretically it could change that too..

ED's can cause more painful periods its true. You probably know that they often stop your periods. This is because your body isn't getting enough calories to run itself properly so shuts down all non-essential functions (temperature control, immune system, reproductive system etc.) to keep the essential ones (repsiritory system, circulatory system etc.) going.
If you aren't getting enough calories or nutrients, your body will start to shut some of these systems down and fight to keep the others going. If your body is having to right to keep your reproductive system going this will lead to painful periods and often feeling very weak and/or sick. If you aren't able to up your calories yet, try just increasing the amount of protein you eat and taking iron supplements as this can often help with that.
Also, ask your doctor for a strong anti-inflamatory such as Mefanamic Acid (spl?). They prescribed that to me and after 20 minutes the pain is just a twinge and you can carry on your day. You may also want to try heat pads (usually available in supermarkets or drug stores) that relieve a lot of the pain.

I have been feeling sick a lot as well... and weak, but my calorie intake is much higher than it previously has been.

Oh yes, my periods are painful as fuck as well. I take painpills and that usually does it, but often it's so bad I'm in bed with a hot pad over my stomach.
Mmm, well, long-term I'd wait and see, since you said you've been better about eating. Short-term the pill may be an option. But along with eating more, if it is still getting worse, it may be more serious. Mine have been straight uphill for the last nine years, but I don't really notice a huge change. I get more of the sharp pains nowadays instead of the plain cramps though.

I've heard that sometimes pain can be caused by the lack of the exercises/physical activities. have no idea where the connection is but who knows?
