Ok, so this isn't really depressing, but it fits into planes in a way so.. Hopefully I got it right. anyways, I will be on a plane for the first time in my life this summer and I'm going out of the country to visit someone. The thing is, I have this phobia of planes. Its mostly because I never have been on one, but is there a way to just worry less about it? I've been told to sleep through the flight so I don't know what happens, I can try that, but is it as bad as some people make it sound?

Honestly, coming from someone who's aerophobic, it's not as bad as it's made up to be. If you don't want the phobia, I'd advise you to fly more. I fucking hate it, but I don't mind it much the more I do fly. Now I just have issues during turbulence.
Bring some music and close your eyes. I never sleep, just close my eyes and let my mind wander. Pretend you're dreaming about flying even, it feels a bit better than facing the reality of your situation.
Honestly, the worst thing about flying for me nowadays is the process around it. I freak out more now at the security checkpoint than on the plane.

Thanks Rith, sort of helped me a bit. The thing is, I can't fly all the time. Summer is just the best/easiest because no school or anything to worry about. Yeah, I guess I would freak out too at the security check.

I love flying it isn't bad at all, just listen to music or watch a movie/tv if the plane as it, they have food/bathrooms. The one thing that I hate, like what Syvelocin said is security, I'm always getting stopped for random searches but all they do is whip my hands  lol. In all honesty I wouldn't worry, maybe the one thing that could scare you would be turbulence(when the plane shakes when up in the air) but even then I won't worry.

Are you going to Europe? If you are, most of those flights are at night and you will probably sleep through most of the flight. A sleeping pill might help if you are really worried, but the best thing to do is to remain calm and relaxed. Just trust the pilot to do his job, and I'm sure you will have nothing to worry about. As other posters said, listen to music or watch movies if you're bored. That usually works for me. If you're lucky enough, you'll get to sit beside someone who won't stop talking the entire flight (personal experience) and you will forget about any worries you have about being on the plane.
Airport security isn't that bad. If you have nothing to hide, just go with the flow. They'll probably just give you the "pat-down" and that's it.

Probably not even pat you down, if you don't bleep in the metal detector. Check your pockets, bag and anything else before you get there. It's quite stressful if you beep, and also quite embarrassing, even though everyone does eventually. In-flight, just relax. I hate flying too, but if you bring a good book, music player etc, that'll give you something to do, and take your mind off things. You could also take a portable games console if you have one. Anything to keep you entertained. Probably don't read during take-off or landing (it makes me feel awful), obviously no electronics on then either (not allowed, until you're up), but mainly, just relax. For security, and immigration, you have nothing to hide, just relax.
Yup, that's the main word. Relax.

Kris, no, actually going to England. I really have nothing to worry about security wise, I think my mind just assumes the worst.

There is nothing really to anxious about... Just keep your mind occupied or sleep and you will be fine.

I do that. I expect doom, death and destruction. Honestly though, the plane journey's probably no more dangerous than the car journey to the airport.
Off-topic: Where in the UK?

Well they do say Air-Travel is safer than any other mode of transport... A boeing 737 takes off or lands somewhere in the world every 5 seconds (I love that piece of trivia)

Thanks for even more input. this is probably my biggest thread.. wow I feel sad. And Ben, I want to say Portsmouth? I can't remember the name, I'll get back to you when I know for sure. Minds a bit scattered right now

According to Wikipedia, Portsmouth airport was closed in '73. Although you may be staying there but flying to a different airport, I suppose.

I'm terrified of planes, and I go on them often. It's really
only as bad as you make it up to be.
Sleeping on a plane before it starts does help. But you
would have to be in a deep sleep not to be woken by
the start up.
what worked for me was drinking anti anxiety med,
eating foods that make me really sleepy before, and
than by the time the plane was in the air and food
was being served I woke up, and quickly fell back
asleep after snack. Hopefully that helps you as much
as it helps me.

Trust me, flying aint that bad.
I have flown countless times, AND obcessed with aviation... :D
I am always nervous stepping on the plane at first, but once your there just keep your mind occupied, you may find that just looking out the window will be good fun, especially passing the clouds is always fun! :D Just keep your mind busy and the flight will go well!!
