I hope this thread offends no one.. but what the heck.
Breast cancer. Basically the most known cancer in the US. We have a whole month for it. I respect that.
But why is there not a special month for all types of cancer. I mean, my grandpa's life was taken by prostate and bone cancer. This is just not fair, in my opinion, for the families who's loved one's death are remembered, but my grandfather's cancer is no more recognized than any other one.
So what do you think? http://http://www.angelsmakingadifference.com/resources/awareness-ribbon-colors/

My mom had cancer and many complications following it, I agree with you. 'Cancer Awareness Month' would probably be a little more appropriate.

why do we need a month for a disease anyway...
I always thought designating specific periods of time towards illnesses, social problems or charities was kinda meaningless. the fundraising should be spread evenly and all the resources put into promoting during that week spread throughout a year in my opinion but hey I haven't got a marketing degree or anything like that.

It's just a way of raising awareness. I'd be curious about the difference in money raised per month in the other eleven months compared to that one month dedicated to the cause.

To help people who have experienced it or have had family members/friends who had it cope a little I suppose. But thats a good point, why not have more attention to other diseases if this one gets a month.

Yeah I get about raising awareness but honestly I don't think having a month for anything makes anyone want to donate more. Raising awareness at select intervals would be more effective at keeping people reminded

Like 9-11, they mourned for 10 years, let's let the victims family move on. I see what you mean Jon.

What kind of interval would you suggest then? Annually seems like a pretty good timeframe to me.

I see Jon's point. They talk about it more, but thats it. I don't think it really drives that many people to donate.
However, it may make people get a test, and find out if they have an early stage that can be removed.

It's the breasts. Not the breasts! D: Take my lungs, just not the breasts.
Mmm. Let's do away with all cancer anything. How do the AIDS people feel? Actually, nothing. I don't really care. But please, all or nothing, really.
inb4 there are several AIDS awareness days. Yes, I know.

Took me forever to figure out what it was too, and it's correct usage.
Horrible example, but here you go.
Poster 1: Nothing wrong with homosexuality
Poster 2: inb4 bible verses
Poster 3: Leviticus 18:22 - "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable."
In anticipation that whatever it is will come up in the conversation eventually. I think it started as a 4chan thing, as everything on the internet did.

I agree with you but I think its because its the most common and people probably want to cut it down so its not as common anymore, you know what I mean? But I definatly think we should have a month to make awareness of it, my Grandma & Mom both had it and well my grandma recently rediagnosed with it, so I definatly like that there is a month, I hate hearing sad stories with people of breast cancer

There aren't days/months/events/popcorn/whatever for everything because people haven't gotten together to organize days/months/events/popcorn/whatever for everything. If the lack of awareness for something bothers you so much, go outdoors and be an activist.
