When did you pick up an instrument?

I never got to experience the joy (or frustration) of picking up an instrument as a child. I'm honestly, so, so, so very jealous of everyone who is musically talented. Music is a huge passion of mine, yet I've never learned how to play an instrument. I feel like I'm missing out. Music already brings me a ton of joy, but I feel like personally being able to play a favorite song of yours would amplify the feeling tenfold.

I have many instruments as favorites. My top favorite would have to be between a guitar or piano. I've never fully learned how to play an instrument but in Middle School I had the trombone but learned little. I would learn by choice if I had the money.

Then go for it hun, learn one. I started when I was really little, but the musical talent runs in my family (and even if it isn't hereditary probably, I had natural ability). I decided to learn on a whim, I just saw my grandmother's grand piano and decided I wanted to learn. None of my relatives wanted to teach me because they thought I was just fooling around, but I came back for Christmas the next year and I already owned my first piano and was in lessons and such. It's definitely easier the earlier you start, so I wouldn't wait.

Do you play by choice or for other reasons? By choice at this point. I've long-since stopped lessons. Lessons are way too stressful for me, I think it has to do with making piano seem like a chore that has to be done. Now, I do it for pleasure only. By the time I started learning the ocarina I realized that and taught myself purely from the ground up on that one. So now I coach myself on all three of my instruments, my voice included. I've been more focused on piano recently though, haven't even picked up the ocarina for some time.

Guitar is my favourite instrument. But I've been blessed to be surrounded my musical minds all my life right up to now so I've picked up other instruments like

Drums, Bass and a bit of Piano.

I don't play those as much as guitar, but love how each sounds and works and enjoy picking then up.
I picked up keyboard as my first instrument when I was 7 I think, but when I got to about 11 I got introduced to the guitar by a friend and I instantly knew I had a passion for it. Weeks and weeks of moaning later and my dad caved in and got me my first acoustic. He said electrics were unnecessary until I knew how to play at an average level and I showed commitment.

Now he wishes wishes he didn't say that. It gets pretty loud :D

But dude, seriously pick up a guitar or whatever instrument and try it. It's never too late. You'll love it. And what you said about playing your favourite songs increases the enjoyment tenfold, is absolutely true.

Do you play by choice or for other reasons? Entirely by choice... though I started piano because a friend was doing it and I loved it once I'd started lessons.

I've been singing my whole life and playing instruments since I was at least six. Maybe younger. I was a rather musical child... and now I go to an arts school for vocal music, haha. I also compose, transcribe, transpose and arrange music... even though I'm not a huge fan of musical theory (blah, worksheets in class).

my first instrument was a guitar at like 5.. i would take my dads when he was at work and play... and then i played like a string bass... like orchestra.. i never practiced.. it just comes to me.. then i switched to percussion... like snare drum .. and a bunch of other cool stuff... basically any percussion instrument you can think of... and to this day i still can pick up any type of percussion or even just use my hands and drum or something... i even beatbox sometimes lol... im very musically inclined... its a big part of my life... oh and i used to be in a school chours

Sing, my voice ~ I sing opera, I am classically trained and i enjoy every min of it, I am not th enormal big fat dude that you normally picture but I sure as hell can sing, I have been since I was four.

I first played piano when I was about 5. But I stopped at about 7-8 and then started again at 10, till I was 11. I picked up trumpet when I was about 11 as well, and still play it to this day.

Well I've never picked up an instrument to play it cause I play percussion! Like Marimba, Xylophone, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, that kinda stuff. It's amazing. I chose to play because it's a form of expression and an extremely fun activity. I do marching band, in the pit, which is Marimbas, Xylophones, Vibes, ect., and I'm part of the Minnesota Brass Marching Core. SOOOOO AMAZING!

I started to play the alto saxophone when I was twelve, and at that point, it was just something to do. But, by the time I was on my second year of playing, it was a passion. Before I turned thirteen I started to play the baritone saxophone, and I haven't turned back since. Apparently I'm really good, and I wish that I could just play forever. Playing my saxophone is like an escape from reality for me.
