View Full Version : Can't go to certain sites

This just started very recently. When I try to go to certain sites, it says "Unable to access the network" and goes on about maybe Chrome is being blocked by my firewall. Well, I added Chrome as a permitted program and that did nothing. I don't think it's Chrome though, because since one of the sites it's not letting me on is my professional e-mail inbox, I had tried it on Internet Explorer as well and there it says "Internet Explorer cannot access the webpage" with the same exact sites that it does this on Chrome with. Diagnosing the connection problems tells me pretty much what Chrome was, but also that my computer seems to be configured correctly, but the site is not responding.
This is really agitating. :/ It's the same sites, and I haven't been able to get onto them at all since the problem started. Anyone have any ideas?

It could be your network firewall.
Although unlikely, there could be something weird with your router.
Type http://www.cryer.co.uk/brian/images/start_key.gif + R, enter "cmd.exe" in the box, press OK, and type the following:
IPCONFIG /RELEASE and then IPCONFIG /RENEW
Hope it works! :)

It's highly unlikely that she'd need to do a /release and /renew, as all that really does, is drop your IP's registration with the router's DHCP server, then request a new IP address again. And if she's able to access some sites, but not others, then it's not an issue with the internal IP addressing.
I would, however, perform a "ipconfig /flushdns" command, as there may be an issue with the cached DNS entries.
If flushing your DNS cache doesn't work, see if http://isup.me/ can access it, if it can, then your ISP may be having a network issue, if it can't, then the site(s) in question are having issues.

I was going to say there is either a line to sight problem or speak to your internet provider usualy it can be that or the sights have done a IP adress ban witch i doubt.I do remember awhile ago using google chrome to access VT and it did the same thing it eventualy let me get on maybe its that.

Look at the properties for your connection.
In W7/Vista this'll be in Control Panel -> Network Sharing Center -> and then click on the connections for the active network (will either be the wireless one you're using or a Local Area Connection)
In Windows XP, right click Local Area Connection and select properties
Then in those options, go to Properties and then press Internet Protocol Version 4 and press Properties. Where it says "Use the DNS server settings" type in 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 in the first box and 8 . 8 . 4 . 4 in the second.
Better guide here (I'm just doing this from memory): http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html
Those are the Google DNS settings. It is very often your end not resolving domain name servers properly that results in these kinds of problems... give it a go anyway

Honestly, I've been having the problem lately. Refreshing the page almost always works. Yes it could be firewall issues but if this is brand new it's probably on the end of google chrome.

I figured it out, it was a program I have installed that was doing it. I don't know how, but all I did was uninstall it and it was back to normal. :P
