Okay... so I'm looking for a new solo to do... I was hoping to do like a Broadway-style routine. I had "All That Jazz" in mind, but before I make my final decision, I wanted an opinion. Does anyone know of any powerful, upbeat musical theatre songs that would be easy to dance to?? Thanks!!!!!
Okay even if it's something like "River Deep Mountain High" by Celine Dion. I don't care, I just need something powerful! Thank you!

Yeah do Popular! Or Defying Gravity would be even better!

Personally I think that the slightly slower ones are the more powerful peices, I Dreamed a Dream from Le Mes, Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera, Don't Cry for Me Argentina from Evits....those would be the ones I would pick.

Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera
Actually, that's a duet. ;)
Although duets would give you a tong more options...
Beneath a Moonless Sky
Love Never Dies (The Song in the Musical)
Past the Point of No Return
All those come to mind quickly for me.

Slower but powerful:
Still Hurting - The Last Five Years
Mama Who Bore Me - Spring Awakening
Don't Cry For Me Argentina - Evita (already mentioned but seconded!)
Maybe This Time - Cabaret
Think of Me - Phantom of the Opera
Shadowland - The Lion King
More upbeat:
The Miller's Son - A Little Night Music
Gimme Gimme - Mamma Mia
I Just Can't Wait To Be King - The Lion King
You Can Always Count On Me - City of Angels
Also, Popular is great but overdone. Defying Gravity is okay if you want to be mediocre. In all honesty, it is VERY hard song to do. The belting takes a ton of vocal control and breath support and most people who are not professionals need a lot of practice to do this song justice. Dancing to it might be difficult as dancing and singing breathe from two separate parts of the body and also use a different center which can be hard to combine without a lot of work. That's not to say don't do it- just that it doesn't SOUND difficult but your ears are deceiving you. (I'm a vocal major/musical theatre geek so I do a ton of research before I begin work on any song.) Also, same for Popular. If you like it, do it.

Thank you. I can't stress this enough when people ask me for my opinion on this stuff though, NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER do Wicked. Or Annie. Or something that is currently on Broadway (a couple exceptions being ones that have been around for a long time. I can get away with Phantom all the time). Unless you are mindblowing, don't do Defying Gravity. In case you ignored the never ever ever ever ever. And Popular? I know this isn't an audition setting, but I'll tell you, judges hear that song a thousand times. I'd say that's the worst thing to use for anything, second to Tomorrow.
Actually, that's a duet. ;)
Christine's in a trance for the whole thing...

Thanks guys! And I can't sing for the life of me. I'm just looking for something to dance to... so I guess it would be a jazz dance to broadway music... Sorry for the confusion!!! :)

Cellblock Tango (er, if that's the proper title) from Chicago. That would make an excellent song for a dance routine.
Also, most of my upbeat songs listed above could likely work too.

Slower but powerful:
Think of Me - Phantom of the Opera
Also would not do this one. It's like a maximum of 2 minutes, and there is very little dancing, both on the Broadway, West End, Vegas, and movie show.
Christine's in a trance for the whole thing...
Actually, it's not a trance as much a haze of wonder for her. She is completely conscious and remembers the whole thing afterwards.
What I think you might be thinking when you type that is, for one instance, the Gilded Arms, which are nonexistent when Meg finds the Passage afterwards (in the movie). That's not so much a trance, but her imagination going into overdrive to create a beautiful setting for the mysterious man who is leading her into the caverns.

Not that I dance, but when I did it, my voice teacher arranged a medley of Think of Me that melded into Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again so it was considerably longer, ended powerfully but I didn't have to do that fucking agitating last bit in Think of Me when I didn't have all that long to prepare it. And I did Wishing separately with a solo bit I wrote about a girl abused by her father, then I sang that as if it was to him. But yeah, I sing and act and I'm a terrible dancer, and mentioning this has no relation to the topic.
Ahh, whatever it is. More figuratively in a trance than actually in a trance. I meant she was kind of transfixed anyway. Every time I've seen it I always got the idea that she really wasn't herself for that bit.

Those two arranged together would sound amazing, I imagine. If you by any chance have a copy of the arrangement your teacher made, I'd love to get a copy. ;)
I guess she could be in a trance, I mean, Erik (the Phantom) is portrayed to have "magic" powers in the stage version. He can shoot fireballs and make the lead Soprano's (whats-her-face) voice change, I guess it wouldn't be hard to make Christine to fall into a trance during the Mirror scene.
