Do you guys think it's right for atheists to shout "Oh my God!". My thing is why would they say it if they don't believe in God? I know it's a reaction among us humans, but why? Why do people who do not believe in a supreme being say "Oh my God!"

I just want to know what you guys think about this.

It's just an expression. It's almost like an idiom now. :P What should atheists shout? Oh my facts? I hate it when people go like: "Why are you saying 'Jesus Christ' when you reject him as your lord?" Well, you shouldn't be saying it either because you are taking the Lord's name in vain. :3

By that logic, a Muslim can't shout "Oh my God!".

Oh my Allah!

Know the old saying? No atheists in foxholes. Because they shout "Oh my God!" all the time.

It's an idiom. Idioms don't have the sense of their original words. Hence, "oh my God" doesn't even refer to God.

Like others said, its an idiom. People don't really think about what it means when they say it, they just do. I really don't think there is anything wrong with it.

As others said, it's an idiom.

And for some atheists, including me, it's just an old habit that can't be quite broken.

An atiest may say "Oh my God" as much as they please. A christian cannot as it violates one of the ten commandments.

Oh my science, why can't they say it?

Why can't they say it?It's just becoming a natural thing for us(some teens).Like Ida said,it's like an idiom.Just a phrase.

Oh my Allah!
Y'all probably know this but this is for those who don't. Allah is basically the islamic word for god.

Oh my god is an expression. It's just like "That bitch!" Do we really mean female dogs? No. "My father is a douche" Do we really mean the vaginal douche that you use to wash out your vagina? No. "Shit!" Do we really mean poo each time we say it? No. "Fuck you!" Do you really want to have sex with everyone you say that to? No.

A christian or whatever it is can look at an ugly dead rat and go "Oh my god!", are they saying the dead rat is god? Not really.

I don't say it, because I'm Christian (sorry, sorry :P) and it violates one of the ten commandments, and I once said it within my mother's earshot and she locked me out (in the snow) in just my teeshirt :P. I don't go mad when other people say it, though. As has been said, it has become an idiom; the words may as well be jumbled up for all the meaning it retains.

Its an expression, I say Christ jesus. --> I beleive in god but I beleive in many and I do not think that they should be held by a name.

But anyway its just something people say.

Me and my friend sometimes say "Oh my Zeus" because we are both Atheist and people at our school get worked up when we say Oh my God. We still both say Oh my God sometimes but not that much. I usually just say "Oh my Gosh" or just "Wow" as replacements.

Saying o my god isn't against the ten commandments as that is not God's name (I'm Jewish but its the same, right?)

Although I usually prefer O my gosh.

I suppose the Bible is very much open to interpretation, but I would say that it qualifies as using the name of thy LORD in vain.

It isn't saying His name though. Do christians interpret the word "God" itself as God's name?

Hell even I used it in my normal life talk. I am not a Christian, nor English is my mother tongue

Peace God

Because we like breaking commandments.

I use it a bunch. And by a bunch, I mean everytime something happens, either "Christ", "Jesus Christ", "Oh my God", "Good Lord", or "FUCK." comes out of my mouth.

And I'm an atheist.

Confucius Buddah and I don't believe in any higher being! are not higher beings. They are philosophers.

I don't yell "Oh my God", and I am not christian, but not because of my disbelief in the faith. I was raised in a house where I get slapped for saying God, even though neither of my parental units seem to sport much of a belief.

It's just a reflex for most. You hear someone say it at an early age, and it sticks. Like saying "God Bless You" is a term used to rid your body of evil demons and the devil entering you when we sneeze. But how many of us believe that still? Not many. It's a reflex.

I say "Holy monkey penis!" Instead or "Oh my god"

Syvelocin

Believe me, I wish it wasn't reflex.

What if someone doesn't worship Gordon Bennett? Is it against the rules to use that expression as well? Because that would be most everyone I'd imagine.

Ooh, I managed to train myself to get out of that one at least. It does help when you went to a French school for primary and so half the day you're using 'à tes souhaits' instead. I either say that or excuse you, depending on whether I think the person will understand what I'm saying if I use à tes souhaits. Sometimes it's just better to not say anything though. I fucking hate it when people say it, and regardless of what I believe, I wouldn't subject anyone to it. Just because you don't know if they actually want to be blessed. I don't... I hate when people say they are praying for me as well. Use your time more wisely.

Me and my friends mess with this subjust and now we say "oh my nonexisting god". It catchs people off guard. Anyways. Oh My God is just a serious of words that are put in that order that at one point in time may have ment something sacred or holy but with current day society it has just changed into another frase for when a person is shocked.

Try using "OMB" and "Oh My Buddha" just to be different. But yeah, it's just a saying.

i think that its not okay for a religious person to say it, you shoudlnt misuse your gods name. atleast with an atheist, theres not a god that they are trying to not dissapoint. its more of an expression rather than literal, so atheists arent being hypocritical by saying it.

So it's only an expression if an atheist says it? If a religious person says it, they're using their deity's name in vain. Lacking in the logic department...

It's a common expression that has been ingrained into our psyche's due to years of indoctrination.
