I think we should have a newsletter, and hold positions for it. I think it'd be really cool, having a bunch of different subjects, maybe even a post of the week, you catch my drift. I saw that it was brought up before and no one really signed up for it, I would if it was brought up again. Please take this into consideration. :)
Thanks,

Well, I thought it could be more like a PDF type thing, and like an editor put it all together, and uploaded it.

The whole point in having the VT chronicle is that people can post news themselves. There would also be issues with publishing it, thats extra work staff have to do.

You should make a poll, eric. So people can vote yes or no. I don't think it's such a bad idea, to be honest. You'd need some volunteers though. Good writers, editors, people who know what they're doing. I'm up for it. It'd be good practice for me :)

The same thing with the podcasts. The members either get banned and stop doing it, get bored and give up or produce something crappy to begin with. I've never seen anything like this actually work.

If they do it(which I doubt), it'd be better if we all just applied for it. Like a mod position, you know? You gotta be good for the job. Better to have no newsletter at all than a really crappy one.

Unfortunately this is true. I hate to say it but if this idea is implemented I think it would be cool and work for a while, but then people would move on and stop doing it. It would be a good bit of work depending on how many people were on the team. I think this has its uses and it would be nice to have but like I said, while it may be good in theory I just don't think it will work in application.

I'm not sure about things in the VT chronicle; there are those things known as newspapers for that, and professional journalists will be able to do far better at writing them up than anyone here. Member of the week, on the other hand, sounds like an intriguing idea.

Well, the OP is talking about a newsletter for VT...I could be wrong but I don't think professional journalists are abundantly available in our community. Something by members for members is perfectly fine in this case, the question is, will they be committed and actually keep up with it.

I really didn't make myself at all clear, did I? :P
What I meant was that it would be somewhat pointless to include stories from the VTDC, because that is for world news, and if a member wanted world news, they would do better picking up a newspaper, or logging on to a news website, for example the BBC, Times online or the NY Times.
Sorry about that.

Ah I see, I understand you now. I think maybe what would work better would be to select a few stories from VTDC and include the thread titles in the newsletter under a header. Maybe "Top VTDC News" or something. Also, the effectiveness of this would depend on how often a new issue of this is supposed to come out.

Hm, maybe. It shouldn't make up the majority of he newsletter, though. I'd say restrict it to only the top news story at the time of publication.

Jupiter
October 16th, 2011, 09:51 PM
or a weekly one
Wonder.
October 16th, 2011, 10:00 PM
I think biweekly would be best. It would be way to hard to do a weekly one, and a month is a long time. A lot could happen in a month.
Jupiter
October 16th, 2011, 10:04 PM
Why would weekly be hard? I don't think it would be.
Wonder.
October 16th, 2011, 10:12 PM
Well, depending on how many people work on it, and what exactly would be in it, it could be fairly simple, or it could take some time to put together. It all depends on every little thing.
Plus, even if it would be easy to do, there would always be some cases where you would need more time, to even things out.
Weekly is possible, but every two weeks gives more room.
Jupiter
October 16th, 2011, 10:15 PM

PureReality
October 16th, 2011, 10:25 PM
Eh, I still say monthly. It's not like a bajillion people would be participating... Maybe just like ten, fifteen and it would give them TIME to write it. Biweekly would be challenging for some people with not enough time. Weekly, eh.
When you say biweekly, do you mean one every two weeks or twice a week? Cause if you mean every two weeks, that would be good but if it was released each month, it could be a specific date like each 1st, or 3rd, whatever.
Jupiter
October 16th, 2011, 10:27 PM

Syvelocin
October 16th, 2011, 11:46 PM
I like it, but I do agree it'll probably be dropped after a while. And as well, I'd like it to be more like a, well, newsletter, instead of a school paper or something. Drop the world news, stick to birthdays, mod openings, whether for member diaries or the forum, notable threads of the week, maybe even some kind of poll about something relevant, and maybe the opportunity for members of VT who do not do the newsletter to send in an article. By article, I mean more like a way for them to communicate something of interest to everyone else, for instance, a staff member or notable VT member deciding to leave, a remembrance to them, possibly a sort of "advert system" where members could get on a list to have a member diary, forum-based service, blog, whatever featured to fill it up a bit.
I don't know, do whatever. :P But just something with all the fun of a school paper, without the school paper... I hate school papers, there's a reason I left my journalism class half-way through the year when I was in school.

tbh I think Monthly would be best weekly would need alot of committed people and it would take a lot of work to write. With Monthly you would have more time to plan the content of whats going in it if it was weekly you constantly be needing a team to plan whats gonna go in it. You cant just throw stuff in there you need to plan to make it look good so in my opinion weekly is best

The idea of a newsletter has been around since day one. The problem is not people getting enthusiastic about it and wanting to take part, it's getting people to do it continually. From my experience people lose interest very quickly.

Weekly, monthly. Monthly's probably a more reasonable goal. You'd have to edit it and all and most of us have school to go to or jobs or other commitments. My social and school life's already dying thanks to VT ;P
-Photographs (Not necessarily just that of the members but those taken by the members. I know I'll like this part and I know quite a number of people on VT who would)
-Funny/smart/motivational quotes from members (I'd love this bit. Lots of y'all say the funniest things that won't fit into my sig.)-Staff corner (Updates, announcements, just saying hi. Whatever the staff wanna say. New people added to the staff, people who retire, schtuff like that.)
-Post/thread of the month (That would be pretty cool. And it'd encourage some members to move out of their comfort zones, maybe.)
-Featured sigs/avies (Mrr. Dunno about this. Just throwing ideas around.)
-New groups (This would be pretty cool. Help promote new groups and stuff. Maybe we could even have a featured group each month)
-Member/s of the month (I think this was a pretty good idea. People like getting acknowledged and feeling all loved. Plus, they'd have to read it to see if they got it.)
-Challenges (For the members and all. Like, it could be a writing challenge, music, posts, sticky challenge, rep, drawing, whatever. It'd be a boredom killer)
-Ask and answer (We could get people for like... Different fields or just one person or a group whatever and people ask questions and we select the best ones and answer them. Give advice or some shiz)
-Member corner (Vote for who it is and all and they could write stuff. Or like the above, people could ask 'em questions. The member could be rotated every month/year/something or just stay the same.)
-Featured song/s (Members could recommend some songs and all. Expand your horizons and shiz. I've started listening to all types of music since I joined VT.)
And loads of other stuff I'm too lazy to write down.
Err, well, there's also the possibility of people being too busy to work on it. Too much effort and people required. People get bored of it. Too confusing. Can't find people who are good/have the skills required. But there's on harm in trying, if it doesn't work, it doesn't. I haven't been here very long so I don't know how the old attempts turned out, but we could always try again. Since more people voted than they did no. Probably cause most of the people who voted were relatively new, though.
