View Full Version : Sex with condom but no birth control?

Me and my girlfriend have talked it over, we both want to have sex. Of course we're going to use a condom, but the thing is she isn't on birth control and it's always good to have that extra protection. We're skeptical about this and concerned about the risks. What do you think? Is sex with a condom but no birth control safe? Or should we wait and see if she wants/goes on birth control so we can be even safer?

As long as you both know how to put condoms on properly (look it up if you need to), you're both safe. As long as the condoms are put on properly and are good quality, they won't snap or anything. It's nice to have birth control too, but condoms are 99% effective.

Sex with any form of non surgical birth control has certains levels of risk, unless you are vasectomised or if she is ligated.
The probability of having accidents are about equivalent to striking the grand pot in any state lottery.
Its better to not do it if possible, unless you are truly able to be responsible for the potential after actions.
I am not encouraging nor discouraging, the choice is yours. Its just my 2 cents worth since you asked.
Cheers

I think I read that condoms are only 95% safe and they can rip and burst. I think you should be safe I mean chances are like Donkey said if you are able to put a condom on correct and follow the rules of using one then you should be Ok.

I always had sex with only a condom as birth control and i'm not pregnant. If you know how to use a condom then it is relatively safe, however you do need to make sure that the condom is the right size, because otherwise there are risks of it breaking or slipping off. If this happens make sure your girlfriend does take the morning after pill. If you do that if there are any problems then it's fairly safe. I'm not pregnant anyway :P

Ah okay.
Kathy, would it be okay to use the morning after pill even if the condom didn't break or anything?

Okay, so I'm not Kathy.. But you shouldn't really use the morning after pill if it isn't necessary (and it is kinda counted as "unnecessary" if it don't break). Plus the morning after pill works to prevent the ovulation (?), so it wont help if she already had it.
If I were you I wouldn't worry this much. Get some good quality condoms, and if it don't break it's like 99% safe. If it break, make sure she takes the morning after pill in time.
And don't use two condoms at the same time even though some people think that'll be safer, they'll rub on each other and the risk for them to break will be higher than with one condom.
Edit: You may also go with a condom and drag it out before you ejaculate, if you want to be safer.

Condoms are only 99-100 percent effective when used with another form of birth control. It's a 1-5 percent chance that the condom will break or slip off during sex.
In all honesty, just make sure you two are ready to face any sort of consequences that might happen as a result of sex. Never ever double up on the condoms (I've known too many people who thought that was a good idea) and always remember to be careful.
There is no reason to take the Plan B (Morning after) pill if your condom did not break. It's just putting her at risk for a lot of things. She will get horribly sick to her stomach, vomiting, fatigued, and so on. The symptoms can be pretty painful (Like a bad flu).
Other than that, sex isn't just there for reproduction. You need to have fun with it, but be so careful.

Okay, thanks for the info. And yes, I know not to use 2 condoms at once. Common sense. :P We both decided to just wait and see what were gonna do.

you could decrease chances of getting her pregnant by avoiding her ovulation days for sex.

You think it's common sense, but it's not. Do you know how many people don't have the common sense needed for common sense things like that? A lot.
Honestly, seeing what happens is a great idea. Planning would be a silly idea. Go with the flow.

People need their common sense for other things, a little more... important?

The OP has common sense, thankfully. But I'm pretty sure not getting pregnant is important, correct?
Anyways. Keep this on topic.

The morning after pill is only usually reccommeded as emergency contraception, not to be used regularly. The effects on a woman's long term fertility and general health isn't known.
Also as Lexi said, there are a lot of possible side effects. However the one time I took it the only side effects I experienced was my period was slightly late.
There are so many options for contraception that there really isn't any need to use the morning after pill unless it is an emergency. There's not just the normal pill, there's implants, injections, IUDs and many more. All of which don't require you to remember to take a pill every day, as different methods of contraception can last from between a few months to 5 years. :)

I don't want to make her do anything drastic though. I know a girl who gets the birth control shot, and the doctors said its affected her growth and her periods are VERY irregular ( 3 month periods must suck ).
I suggested to my girlfriend that we buy condoms with a spermicidal lube for that extra protection just in case.

That really sounds like enough. True, nothing works 100%, things break, things are used improperly, but as long as she doesn't have latex allergies (in which case, female condoms are polyurethane IIRC)you should be fine.

If you use it right, you should be good with just a condom. Just make sure it's on before you make any contact at all.
