View Full Version : Should I go back on meds... how?

I used to be on Abilify as a mood stabilizer. But my mom took me off of it because she doesn't believe in medication, doesn't want me addicted (my dad was addicted to prescription meds,) and she thinks I'm doing better. But she has no idea. My emotions are scaring me out of my mind. I'm having panic attacks everyday, and I've been literally going from euphoric to suicidal in a matter of minutes.

I've just been keeping this a secret for a while now, and I'd like to look into being put back onto medication.

How do I tell my mom this? Do we have a say on what type of meds I'd get? I just really don't know what to do, and my case manager is terrible and is taking forever to get me a therapist and nobody has any clue how urgent my problem is.

Tell her how you have been feeling lately. Tell her that it is really urgent. There is no way to make her believe you though. Just be straight with her. How long have you been off it? It will take a little while for it to start working again if you've been off for a while.
And you do have to consider the downsides. It may have been doing to harm than help, so consider that as well.

Good Luck!

My advice is be careful with those meds. Obviously it seems like you may need it. I don't know your exact condition, but Abilify is a weird choice for a mood stabilizer (it's an anti-depressant and anti-psychotic). Is Bipolar the issue? Have you had bad reactions to standard SSRI meds (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc)? In any case, you're gonna want to go to your mom first (say that you think you need the medication), but also refer to a school psychologist. They can refer you to a PC who is willing to prescribe. If your problem is bipolar, Abilify may help, but you have to find multiple sources to okay you on this (i.e your mom, a psychiatrist).

Be careful and good luck.
