okokok, guess what! The principal of my school asked me to come by his house and fix his computer. The only thing that is wrong with it is that his scanner doesnt work. Its an incompatability with his OS (WinME) and software drivers, so Im gonna install Windows XP Pro on his system and run the image acquistion, and then it will be fixed. Im also goin to tune up his PC to make it boot up faster :)
$10 an hour, 10% charge of software
+
5 hours work, $500 of software
=
$100 richer! :D
plus Im going to charge installation fee and the diagnostics fee with the tune up :)
ya think that he'll wanna shoot me when I tell him the cost? :P

i know... but it IS a scanner that doesnt work :P
in any exotic case, I will have to at least charge him $50 for the work that I put into it.
I have to bring the computer over to my house, move allll the files over to my disk, format his drive in NTFS, install windows XP pro, move all the files back over to his drive, MANUALLY convert his folders for the OS change, then go back to his house with the computer to install the software... theres some other stuff that I have to do aswell, so ya know.

what you should do is do it out of the kindness of your heart and heel think more highly of you, instead of just being a greedy nub

i had to do a lot of work, mind u... I even had to rent out space on another hard drive! besides, normal computer repair men charge about that much every HOUR! I think that its definitely fair :?
in any case, I'm not even going to show him the list of procedures and costs (which comes to about $138.50)... I'm just going to ask him how much he thinks I should get paid (how satisfied he is) and take that much.

Why did you have to format it? Why not just upgrade it (Windows, NOT the HDD) leaving the partition intact?

upgrade a hard drive??? O.o
ok, (1)the drive had the entire thing stored to one partition, and (2)u cant 'upgrade' a harddrive - u would have to buy a new one and that would cost more money. why spend more money if u dont have to?

No, you said that you installed Windows XP Professional on that computer. It had Windows ME. Why not just Upgrade Windows ME to XP? Not that Hard Drive. The Operating System. You know, when you start Setup in Windows, it usually gives you an option to either Upgrade or Make a New Installation. I never said anything about upgrading or changing HDDs.
And, what does it matter that everything was on a single partition? You can still upgrade Windows. Hence the Upgrade VS Full Editions of XP.

oh, I thought u meant the HD :P but I couldnt do that anyway because upgrading from ME always seems to erase the data on it... it might keep some settings and configurations, but Ive never had an upgrade save documents and programs. :?
besides, ME is not a stable OS, and theres more chance of error while upgrading, rather than just doing a clean sweep, reformating in ntfs, and installing XP Pro.
btw, his computer and everything like scanners and whatnot now works perfectly =]

Windows Me (Millennium)...
It's Microcrap's idea of a pure nightmare...
Anyone with it is better off formatting their HD, switch to the NTFS filesystem format and then bump it up to Windows XP Pro.
Of course, the WinXP Setup (booted from the CD) will do all the formatting and the filesystem changes for you. Don't you love automation?
