I've just started uni and come down with a really bad cold, Ive got a blocked up nose, and a raw cough.

I did have a sore throat but thats faded however in classes I cant stop coughing, some nights I cough up phlegm and other nights I just cough pretty badly, seems to only affect me at night and in the morning.

Ive tried cough syrup and cough sweets and they sorta help for a little while.

Is there anything I can do to stop this cough quickly as its getting embarrassing going to lectures and having a coughing fit.

Thanks

When you're coughing up the phlegm try to get it all out or get as much out as you can. Drink alot of warm drinks and try night nurse. Theres also a throat spray you can get from the chemist that will numb your throat for a while, try that every few hours and the day nurse medicine, and use night nurse at night it'll help you sleep. When you're drinking try to drink a lot of water and juice too.

I agree with everything Aaron says. I would also advise taking some carrot syrup (that's what I call it :P) too, it always helps me easing my cough!

It's called Freshers Flu! One person gets a cold, goes out and spreads it to everyone else, who spreads that etc. Everyone's ill in the first weeks of uni!

DayQuil works wonders - if you can get it I would recommend it.

Funnily enough, I came across this thread in the midst of a coughing fit. Going to try some of these tips because, yeah, coughing fits in class is a tad embarrassing.

I dunno if they have Halls where you live but I find they work. They're meant for sore throats which tends to be the cause of my dry cough.
