(VACAVILLE, Calif.) -- A health teacher in Vacaville, California has landed in hot water for his policy of punishing students who say "bless you" in his classroom.

Steve Cuckovich calls the common courtesy "disrespectful and disruptive," and he took 25 points off of a student's test score when the boy said it after a female student sneezed, according to local ABC News affiliate KFSN-TV in Fresno.

When the word got out about the teacher’s tough penalty, there was an uproar from parents, with some accusing Cuckovich of being anti-religious.

The William C. Wood High School teacher fired back, saying it had nothing to do with God or Christianity and explaining that the blessing is nonsensical in contemporary society.

"When you sneezed in the old days, they thought you were dispelling evil spirits out of your body," Cuckovich said. "So they were saying, 'God bless you' for getting rid of evil spirits. But today [it]...doesn't really make any sense any more."

The school district has spoken to Cuckovich, who will no longer knock points off kids' grades for saying "bless you" but maintained he will still run a tight ship in class. Superintendent John Niederkorn said the incident is still under investigation.

As much as I'd usually not care about a story like this, it pains me that teachers find it appropriate to exploit their disgusting egos to the point where they're adversely affecting students for absolutely fucking nothing.

Students have the right to express social customs when they see fit. Really, the definition of a "disruptive event" is so vague these days that it could be applied to anything at all.

I'd hate to have him as a teacher.

Well... a story worse than mine.

I got sent to the principals for farting too any times in grade 2. I find it somewhere between amusing and sad.

But I think loosing some points off a test is worse than getting sent to the office to be honest. And the sad thing is, 'bless you' can be a non-religious term. Although commonly associated with 'god bless' to bless can mean to endear or to express gratitude. So to say 'bless you' could be to say it is excused as in endearing the fact it is not a big deal. Although endear is a bit of a stretch to meet its excusing, people now say it simply meaning it as a polite acknowledgement of it's being excused anyway.

And that a large over-reaction as well. I don't care what someone else's beliefs are, and as I see it there is no need to.

I'd hate to have him as a teacher.

Honestly, who wouldn't?

If someone sneezes in my class, almost everybody in earshot says it.

Even if a student was being religious by saying that, that's his/her right.
Shouldn't society be free to proclaim his/her faith(s) without being oppressed or discriminated against?

Ridiculous! It's generally considered good manners to say 'bless you' when someone sneezes, and some people say it almost automatically, as naturally as please or thank you. To say that it's disrespectful is complete nonsense! Where was this guy brought up?

I'm not a religious person, but I do say Bless You everytime someone sneezes. If I had had him in High School I'd have caused so much hell....What a jerk.
