What is involved in your state to get your licences? Do you need to get your learners? How long before you can drive by yourself? What are the licence stages?
In my state (Tasmania), we have the following stages:
-L1 (Learner licence #1)
-L2 (Learner licence #2)
-P1 (Provisional licence [solo driving] #1 )
-P2 (Provisional licence [solo driving] #2 )
-Full licence
How to get them:
To get your L1, you must be 15 and 11 months of age. You have to sit a computerized test that consists of testing of the road rules. Once you pass, you need to wait until you're 16 years old until you can drive. You must drive with a fully licensed adult, have an alcohol reading of 0.00 and a maximum of 80km/h (about 50mp/h [correct me if I am wrong]). You also need to display L-Plates (http://www.innerwestlifestyle.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/l-plate.gif) on the front and the rear of the vehicle. You loose your licence if you don't display these.
You need to have this licence for a minimum of three months. Once the three months pass, you need to sit a practical examination which costs AU$78.40 and can be quite difficult for some. Once you pass, you are given your L2 licence once you pay a AU$28.00.
You must be on this licence for a minimum of 9 months under the same conditions above, plus a minimum of 50 logged driving hours.
When the nine months is up, you can sit your P1 practical, which is rather similar to the L2 test. This is quite hard, and I got mine on the third try.
You must be on this licence for a year, and display P-plates (http://www.kidsolo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/p_plate.jpg). You are limited to 80km/h and must have an alcohol reading of 0.00. You can drive alone.
Once the year is up, you automatically go to your P2 licence with no testing. You don't have to display P plates, and you can follow the maximum speed limit like fully licensed driver, how ever, you must have an alcohol reading of 0.00. You are on this licence for two years. You then move onto the Full Licence, which is the same as the above, and you are allowed to have an alcohol reading of 0.05.
And thats it!

You need to be 17 in the UK to get your provisional (Learners license) and to start driving lessons. When you have your provisional you're allowed to drive but ONLY with someone over the age of 21 and with three years driving experience. You need driving lessons, currently most people require about 20 hours although thats not law nor standard it could be more or not very likely, but less. You've got to pass a theory test which is made up of two parts, 50 multiple choice questions based on road safety rules, road signs, etc. And a hazard perception test which is watching clips of a driver driving down roads and clicking on something that could potentially be a hazard for you. And then theres the practical driving test which an examiner sits with you and asks you to do things you would have learnt during your lessons with a company.

In my state (WA, USA) to get your permit you have to be 15, then you take an eye exam and show proof you're enrolled in a drivers ed class. If you aren't enrolled in one, you have to wait til you're 15 1/2 and take a written exam. With your permit, you can drive whenever and have as many people in your car as you want, but you have to have someone with you who has had their license for 5 years. You have to have your permit for 6 months before you can get your license.
Once you turn 16, you have to show proof that you took a drivers ed class. Then you take a drive test with an instructor. Then you can have a bunch of restrictions the first 6 months, then some of them get lifted but the rest still apply until you're 18.

In Ohio, USA it works like this. At 15 and 5 months you go in and get your learners permit, you can drive with your mom and dad or legal guardian whenever you want but you can only drive with them.
When you turn 16 you can get your Drver's Liscense and go wherever.
Inbetween your Learners Permit and Actual Driver's Liscense you need to go through Driver's Edu and In-Car (driving with an instructor) and 50 documented hours of driving with your parents.

Well it seems like there are so many car accidents with people doing stupid things. It just seems like if you can be a complete idiot while driving, then it's easy to get one.

In South Dakota you can get an instructional permit at age 14. To get one, you take a test from the SD Department of Transportation. It consists of 20 questions. If you pass the test, you get your instructional permit. You have to have a parent or guardian with you and can drive at any time. You have to have this for 6 months (unless you have taken Driver's Ed, then its 3).
After that you get your Restricted Permit (14 Years old, 6 months). You can drive by yourself with anyone in the car between the hours of 6am-10pm (some exceptions). After that time, you have to have a parent or guardian in the car with you.
-If you are out later than 10pm and get stopped, they will probably let you go as long as you were doing something that made you late to get home.
You have this permit until you are 16. At age 16 you get your operators license. You can drive any time you want with no restrictions. Its your license.
My state has the lowest driving age in the U.S.! :) Pretty much anyone can get their license here, its very easy. You don't have to have documented time or anything like that.
ALSO, Any kid that is doing something related to farmwork, they can drive at any age at any time. So, if you are 7 and can see over the steering wheel, you can drive anywhere in the state as long as its related to farmwork.
Love my South Dakota State!

It is because they are stupid not us. I try not to goof off while I am driving and if I do it is only with certian people. My income is hald based on my driving ability, I drive ambulance so I am a pretty adept driver.
Obviously, not hard enough. :)
Ummm, dude, I failed on my first attempt....

Well according to the DMV's website and general knowledge of the law:
I must be 16 years old and have completed a Driver's Education course. Now that I think of that, state education courses are taking enrollments right now, but whatever.
You may earn your learners permit at 15 and 6 months and you must complete an eye, knowledge, and skill exam when you apply for your full license.
This is how my school does it, but I'm not sure about other schools, but school-run Driver's Education courses can be taken 3 months before your 16th birthday. Whereas I said before, State courses can be taken when you turn 15.
So...yeah.
I have an overwhelming desire to drive, but also a fear of driving. So I think I'll take a school course. xD
Man, not to mention getting the license is so expensive it's like $450 for classes and $50 for the license itself.

In Québec, you get your permis d'apprenti conducteur when you're 16. You can then hold it for a year and get your permis probatoire, or go to a driving school and get it in 6 months. Permis probatoire has half the demerit points, and you have it for a year before getting your full permis de conduire

Unless you're a BADASS like ME that, because of a loophole in the law, can take both at the same time.

For my Province I can get my learners at 14 and licence at 16.
Terms for learners are:
- must have an instructor on vehicle unless it's a scooter/moped/bike.
- must have no alcohol in blood
- Cannot drive between 12am and 5am (or 6 or 7 not sure)
- must be registered as occasional driver to car
- and some other stuff
I however got my learners at 16 and my licence test is in 3 days.
In my province we have a BAC of .08% for full drivers. When you pass your road test you are given a "GDL" Class 5 (normal) licence and you have to wait 2 years and then you take another road test for $168 + Cost of printing new licence (bout $60).
The only difference I can see is with GDL you cant have any alcohol in system where as full you can have .08%.
For my province to get the licence the test basically goes over:
hill parking with a curb (friends always say it's uphill)
parallel parking (3 tries or fail)
merging
attentiveness to surroundings & road signs the normal type stuff ect...

Very easy.
Learner's Permit at 16: Must pass one 20 question written test.
Intermediates 6 months later: Must have completed 60 hours of logged driving with an adult over 21; 50 day-hours, 10 night hours. You then take a road test which consists of driving, (parallel) parking, stopping, and turning correctly.
Unrestricted License: 6 months later. Can have as many people as there are seatbelts in the car.
Full License: 21 years old. The license is now landscape so the authorities can immediately tell if you can drink or not.
Its a relatively easy process, IMO.

It's actually 15 1/2, I think. ;)
And, until you turn 18 (or maybe 21??), you're forbidden from driving at certain late-night hours.

In California, you have to wait until you're 16, and then there's a bunch of complicated stuff, so I think you can only freely drive once you're 18. Never bothered to look into it, so I wouldn't know :P
As for right now, the "X" button is accelerate, and the square button is brake. Problem? :P

basically it all depends on where you are every state / country has different laws and requirements for teen drivers. I know in my state when i went for my license even after drivers ed and having my learners permit for 4 1/2 months i still couldnt get my license until my parents went through an 8 hour class as well teaching them the "teen driving laws"
In CT its 16 to get your learners permit and then you cant get your actual license until you complete drivers ed and hold your permit for 4 months or complete a state drug and alcohol / safe driving class and then you need your learners permit for 6 months i think but either way your parents must complete the "teen driving for parents" class
but for me the test itself was fairly easy theres study guides and practice tests online and its mostly common sense.

In Russia to get a license you need to study at special driving school. There are lots of them around. You can't drive alone and there are no interim kinds of licences. You can enter a school when you're 16 and normally all the people study about 3,5 months and after that they take exam but there's a chance to study as long as you want but you need to pay extra. You can't take the exam if you're not 18. You can drive only with a qualified tutor. The exam is 20 questions test, manoeuvring on the driving "playground" and driving in the city. If you pass all the parts of the exam then you get a full license.
