Many people experience this fear.
It can be because of they don't want other people to be gay, it can be because they're somehow ashamed of what they have, they fear it may lead to inappropriate situations, or they're afraid others will think, whether they already know one's gay or not, that they're attracted to them specifically.

As for the advice, I wouldn't worry so much. Getting an erection is normal, everyone gets one. Most people consider this to be normal as well, instead of making a big deal out of it. Don't worry about it :)

Its normal to have that fear before doing it for the first time. Or even if you have already done it before. Erections are random and can come at anytime.

If you mean non- sexually, than I don't think it would be too much of a problem. If you don't focus on it than it might not happen. Sometimes if you even over focus it might just stop it there, so go ahead and don't worry!
