you dont have Blink 182 in there? Thats terribly disappointing.

they are the best band that ever played.
all 132 of their songs beat any other bands...ever.

Blink182 if anything are considered light punk, or Alternative rock.

Hell they're FAR FROM THE BEST. They've offered nothing unique, I could list off 5 other generic bands with the same sound.

Take The Restarts for one, a UK punk band; no singer has his voice, NONE. It's amazing in it's aggression.

Hell, if the band doesn't sound pissed off and angry through the drum set alone, it's not punk. Blink 182 relies on simple riffs and high pitched vocals, far from aggressive music, albeit I'm not calling it shit.

Travis Barker is untouchable. he is a god at drums.

Blink 182 covers many genres. they were more punk earlier, but all of their music gets better as it goes. they are still punk and always will be.

also, screamo isnt punk just for the record. its shit.

everyone think about that before they say a band is good.

Travis Barker is good at drums, but not all that amazing when compared against the legends.

Hell, my local drumming friend (drummer for 3 bands) can drum all the Blink 182 songs easily.

If you want drumming insane skill, listen to Aus Rotten (changed name to Behind Enemy Lines)

Screamo isn't punk, that's why it's called screamo? lol

And essentially Blink182 is in "mainstream punk" but when punk was created, the major thing behind it was "DON'T SIGN A RECORDING LABEL", tons of local bands here have made their own recording labels or joined another locals. Being in the publics eye is completely what punk GOES AGAINST.
So I fail to see how Green Day, Blink 182 or Sum 41 are considered punk.
They did sell out, but who wouldn't sell their "genre" for a few mill ;]

i know a ton about music...probably more than you. so, your wrong about that buddy.

yeah, punk does think that if you make money, then your a sellout.

but all of those people who believe that are absolutely stupider than stupid, because they dont realize that they only way you make money is to have people hear your music.

who doesnt love money?

if you dont, see a doctor.

Eh.. I listen to Anti-Flag (my second favorite band :P), NOFX, and Rise Against(Rise Against isn't really very punk)... I listen to some others, but I only know a song or two from other groups, and I can't think of all of their names off the top of my head.

HAHA! Yeah, alright then :p As soon as you called Blink 182 punk I realized you know very little about this sort of music.

There's a difference between

"I hate this band because other people know them"
^that is straight up stupidity. and
"I hate this band because they tried being punk but then signed a major recording contract."

3 bands from Ottawa have been offered and all turned it down, and they're making mighty big bucks without it. They stay true to their genre.

its funny, because you are telling me that Blink isn't punk.

firstly, let me say that its my opinion. hell, i could even think that punk meant hip-hop...but that extreme. the point is, everyone interprets music in a different way, and because of that, i go to the professionals: Blink 182 themselves. My dad is friends with Anne Hoppus (Mark Hoppus's(the bassist in Blink 182) sister) and so ive met Mark a few times when he wasnt busy with touring and producing and creating. Ive asked him many questions, and one of the first, is what music he considered Blink 182 to be. this is what he said on a light quote:

"Blink is actually really a little bit of every kind of rock. We have always edged towards the punk side, but songs here and there sound different than punk, and some are very punk. It's all about how you interpret the music and what it means. But, if you were to ask me, i'd tell you that we are a mix between Punk, Alternative, and Pop Rock."

so, Blink 182 is punk. from the man himself.

But you claimed them to be one of the greatest bands of all time, they're FAR from it.

Their chords aren't that hard to play, nor are any of their instruments for that matter. And no, he didn't call them punk, he called them
Punk/Pop Rock/Alternative.

Which is quite funny because if you knew anything about punk, you'd know it wasn't created to "change the government, change the world"
HELL NO!
Punk was created to say (Excuse the language) but
FUCK MAINSTREAM.

Pop Rock was exactly the reason punk was created, when all the pop rock bands were getting big and selling out, punk was made to basically say, we don't want to conform and won't join the media's eye. We will stay true.

Blink 182 is far from that concept.
Sure their musics may seem angry/anti-government, or faster.

But punk is more a concept over a genre. It was a wave that sweeped the nation.

Rock and roll was made to test barriers
Metal kind of didn't serve a purpose (I'm not saying it's bad, just no real movements, a decent genre for sure)

Punk was made to hate bands in the media spotlight.
If you're in the media spotlight, you've become the joke of punk.

I don't care what the band member said, here's a quote from The Sewer Rats;
"Fuck Green Day, Fuck Blink 182, Fuck Sum 41, FUCK OTTAWA"

I apologize for all the language, it's just either quotes or messages. If it needs to be edited I'd understand why :P

OMFG!

please, with all due respect, do not speak about Blink 182 unless you truly know what is going on, and if you think that you do, then you wouldn't have said that.

Blink 182 did not break up. they are not dead, they are not over.

Blink 182, in February of 2005 announced that they were going on an indefinite hiatus...in other words, a break.

Travis Barker, the drummer, along with Mark Hoppus, the bassist created a side band called +44, and Tom Delonge, the guitarist, because of relationship "drama" created a different side project called Angels and Airwaves.

they have both said that "they see Blink 182 creating more albums in the future, but they just need time away from each other to capitalize on their relationships"

now please, if anyone thinks that they want to debate over it, then i advise you dont, because i will kill your argument. besides, i dont not think that this is the place to argue about it. if you really feel the need to argue with me, then PM me.

So what's everyone's favorite sub-genre, if you have one? I think I'd have to go with crust.

Octo22
April 25th, 2007, 05:33 PM
Sub genre...tough one.

I'd go for a more lyrical punk. The Restarts and Behind Enemy Lines focus more on lyrics over the sound. Although they still manage to get that anger sound.

Anything to rile me up.

And why're you saying this in a PUNK thread?

Go to alternate / rock for that.

I listen to Punk + Electronica,
I don't like Rock and Roll, hence why I'm in THIS thread.

Okay guys, Blink 182 are punk, but they just aren't clean punk, they were pop punk.
They broke up for good because Tom had to be a cockhead and become all serious and churchy about life.
There was an article in kerrang, about Travis and Mark talking about how they feel about Tom. They said they don't give a shit about him anymore, since he changed his number and Tom sent his manager over to Mark to say he didn't want to be in the band anymore.

No more Blink.
End of discussion

Back to the topic, good punk bands are Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash and of course, Dire Straights

I listen to Dropkick Murphys as well, I was also reading an article on one of my favorite bands (Gatsby's American Dream), and although to me they don't seem punk, it listed them as punk. I don't always pay attention to genre of music, I just know if I like something from listening to it, and I really like all types, but I'm more into Punk/Alternative/Indie.

Blues? What the fuck.. They were a bit country rock, but not blues.. Dire Straits had a punk feel to them, thats what I think
And I know usually posers say that, but I am not one of them

More great punk bands:
Fugazi
The Damned
Reel Big Fish
And of course.. Rancid
