Preschoolers in Vanuatu Need Your Help
by David L. Meyer – CEO, Hand of Hope
On a recent trip to Vanuatu, a group of islands in the South Pacific East of Australia, I was stunned to learn about a major need in the country—preschooler children who literally did not have any supplies for school, not even the basics like pencils and paper. I remember when my kids needed school supplies, and I just can't imagine not being able to provide such a simple need for them.
I felt immediately in my heart that we needed to do something to help. So I talked to mom and we've committed to send a large shipping container full of school supplies to help these children. And we're asking you to help. See a list of supplies you can donate.
Communities and Teachers Struggle to Provide Supplies
Preschools in Vanuatu are community based and are therefore run and supported by the parents, churches or individual families in the region. Teachers receive a field based training program where they are trained for five weeks – one week is spent learning to make toys from local materials because there is no money to buy supplies. Teachers sometimes work for months without any support, but because of their passion and commitment they work for years in their preschool classrooms.
The literacy level in Vanuatu is very low because children in the preschool classrooms do not have basic school supplies like paper, books, and pencils to help them learn to read, write and do math.
There simply is not financial support or resources available to provide for these children.
We will be collecting new and very gently used school supplies for the preschools in Vanuatu until December 1, 2011. We will ship the container with donations by January 1, 2012.
