when u create a thread and change its settings you should be allowed to set a limit to how many answers you want to receive (If you want), then it should automatically lock the thread, and as for it supposedly putting a moderator out of a job it wouldn't because they still have to moderate the answers. Simply if you don't set a limit it won't lock.

I give credit to Origami for half of the suggestion.

Please don't double post; instead edit your first post. I've merged both of your posts together. -Jon/Donkey

I disagree. If you had people who weren't informed, and weren't giving proper advice, and the OP needed better advice, they couldn't get it, because it was automatically locked.

Plus, I don't think this is possible with the vBulletin permissions and such.

What if the answers you get are wrong? Or something. It's better to ask a mod to lock your thread when you have the answers you want in my opinion.

Plus, I'm not sure this would even be possible through vBullentin.

I know of mods that will lock a thread on x replies. don't know of vB has it

anyways I disagree as well. what Weeping said. some answers might be wrong (or slightly off topic)

then at the end of it it could ask if you want the thread to be locked.

all programming is experimental :-)

Why is this such a big deal? Oh, no. Three people said the same thing. It's the end of the world! Oh wait, no it isn't.

I dont like this idea seems pointless. What if you dont get your answer in the amount of replies you choose?

Its not that bad an idea, if you are considering helping the mods rather then requesting a lock, and prevents spam of repeated answers.
As the nature of some questions do not actually require many points of views for starters.

On the other hand, its bad when you get retarded answers along with 3 more who second that answer, thus draining the thread quota, and as mentioned, some answers may go off topic, or may be somewhat incorrect.

Its a double edged sword, but i'd doubt it would happen.
A good point to note, and it too depends on the population as well.

If you want your thread to be locked, just report it. There is no need for this.

exactly what Jon said part of being a Mod is locking threads and really it's not that hard to click the report button.

Umm, no. You are mistaken. I never said anything like this. I simply advocated prohibiting repeated answers exclusively within the VTHQ section of the forums.

Maybe not built in but there are thousands, thousands and thousands of MODs available for vBulletin forums. I'm sure there are like 30 that do this effect asked.

But I do not feel it would work. Was a member on a forum that used this and it just caused problems as there were thousands of unlock topic requests etc. And then if there was another reply the topic would lock itself again.

What's everyone's fascination with locking threads?

So the old threads don't all get crappy replies like that. :locked:
