I was in CBT for about 9 months. I could have had a baby :P
I thought it worked quite well, I had my last session last week. It definitely helped me to understand my problem and be able to work out my triggers and stuff, and then I managed to stop myself from self harming, and I could tell when I was having a "dysfunctional" thought pattern, and stop it.
I thought it was pretty good, so it's always worth trying it :)

I'm in Aus, and it is DBT here, I think....is it the same thing, or? o.O
Anyway, I am half-way (I think) through, and it has really, really helped. Even if you have to go through it twice, it REALLY does help! You learn more about learning how to control your emotions, become less impulsive, find different/better/safer coping strategies, learn more about your triggers and how to cope with them, etc.; you do a chain analysis on what happens before, during and after you self-harm: not just your actions but your thought process, and you will learn how to change your thoughts/behaviour to keep or reduce your harm patterns. You also do diary cards, which are quite irritating, but if you do them, and use your skills, you may notice a pattern of better moods/less self-harm, which feels very achieving!
Good luck <3

CBT and DBT are different things, but can be used to treat the same problems :)

I have had CBT in the past, and i will be having again soon..
I think personally it didnt work for me, because i wouldnt give it a chance. I wouldnt let myself think it would all get better, so i kind of shut out everything they would say. Having said that, im sure if i would have given it a chance it could have helped.. hence me going back again.
If you work at it, and try to help yourself then i can see it working :)

I'm sorry if this is really obvious, or if I'm just missing a clue here, but what is CBT and/or DBT???
I may just be being a little bit dumb here :P

I finished CBT with my old therapist Arielle about 2 months ago. Now I have a case manager trying to get me back into some form of therapy. Arielle was the best therapist I have had, she was young (in her mid 20s) and really creative.
She wanted to hear the music I listen to according to what mood I'm in, she took me out to eat for my birthday (but I had to call and make reservations to get over my social anxiety :P), she took me for walks, and she helped me find ways to cook things I like with limited food.
When I cut, instead of doing that stupid, shitty "Well why did you cut / you shouldn't do that / think about your family" crap, she told me to draw how I was feeling, or to draw the blood dripping on the paper, or an arm full of cuts. She encouraged me to embrace how I felt, but how to get rid of it in other ways. Drawing morbid pictures wouldn't hurt anyone, and she knew that.
It was a good experience, pretty sure it was because I was comfortable around Arielle.
But it's been 2 months and without it I've been so weak without support.

CBT is cognitive behavioural therapy..
basically its a type of therapy that makes you challenge your thoughts and try to change them.. its like talking out your problems..
