What are some of your distractions or alternative for cutting?

For me, instead of cutting, I sometimes like to use the rubber band trick. It works out a lot of the time, just snapping it against my wrist.
Another thing I do is sometimes I lightly hit a pencil against my hand or wrist. Doesn't sound like much, but it really helps me out, especially at school.

As for distractions...I listen to music a lot of the time. It calms me down. And I love to write. I try to keep my mind of pieces of writing that don't deal with cutting or self-harm.

What about you guys?

- Trying to control my breathing. Inhale 5 seconds, hold it 5 seconds, exhale 5 seconds. Repeat. Feeds more oxygen to the brain, allows you to think more rationally.

- Scratching my arms.

- Exercising until I'm dizzy.

- Smoking.

- Swinging on the swings across my house, at the playground.

- Doing random things on the internet... especially tumblr.

When I had first decided to stop when I really thought I was going I drew on my wrist with a red gel pen and focused on trying to make it look like blood.
