View Full Version : How Homophobic is your School?

Out of 10 how Homophobic is your school? If 10 is social suicide if you even display slight homosexual actions and 0 if, anything goes.
I would love to rate my school a 0 )as I am bisexual) but I have to say a 6. I live in Australia. A few openly gay people but it is frowned upon generally :( .
So rate your school and which country you live in please :D

i would have to say 1 or 2, and i live in USA. A lot of us athletes like to play around and act more "playful" then most other guys in our school. The majority of us are straight, but aint nothing wrong with acting gay or even being gay for that matter. Being gay is just a status, nothing more or nothing less. I think of it like if you are gay and you're happy about yourself, go ahead and be proud. Why live your life being afraid to show who you really are. Our schools in hawaii i think are a lot more open to homosexuality than schools in the other 49 states just because we have such diverse groups of people that anyone can be of any status and it wont be anything new to us.

How is that not homophobic?
When I was in highschool, there were never any big official events or activism in support of gay rights and equality, but there were quite a number of LGBT students and they, for the most part, were well liked and popular. So, maybe... 1 or 2?

8 or so. The girls don't have a probably with gay guys. The guys on the other hand think it "isn't natural". Funny thing is, the chicks don't like lesbians but the guys do. Guess it turns them on or something.
I think homophobia's as ridiculous as religious persecution. It's like instantly disliking someone for liking green cause you like blue.

9 or 10.
It's weird, really. Guys will kid around and touch each other and 'act' gay just to make fun of it, but if you're actually gay, you probably won't go a day without some sort of riducule from SOMEONE. 'Fag' and 'Gay' are the most common insults around my school.
I get picked on just for supporting gay rights and participating the the Day of Silence. There isn't a single out kid in my whole school.

My old school was very very homophobic. Now I have moved, college seems more relaxed and a lot more mature about. Nobody really cares if you are gay or not.. 2 maybe. Your always going to come across one that's against it.

2. I just discovered last night that the entire year knows about me being bi for 6 months, yet not one mention was made of it to me and it has not caused any problems. And the friends I actually came out to have been very supportive of it. Only reason it's not a 1 is because some of the teachers can make "homophobic" jokes, but I really just found that you just need a sense of humour.

4. I live in Northern Virginia, there are some homophobic kids. But most of kids don't care, and those who don't like it don't say anything. I have a friend who goes to my old middle school... ohmygod. He gets pushed in the lockers and punched in the locker rooms. :(
PS: I also have lots of teachers that know I'm gay, and they are perfectly fine with it and stand up for me.

If your suspected of being gay then well your fucked, I get insulted cause of it and I'd say verbal harrasment and rumours and people and shouting. My so called friends don't stick up for me and if your gay you need these 'friends' otherwise your screwed and your probably socially dead and it makes you feel no longer part of the school. Which is why I'm never coming out to the school anymore.
But if your straight your fine.
But then again, we are an old farmers town so, even anywhere, if you look gay, you'd get beat up. Its happened to me. Happens to everyone :/ Moving as soon as I'm 18 can't stand it anymore.

I would have to say my school is a 1 or 2. I go to a private school and there are a lot of people who are very supportive towards homosexuals. I moved to private school my freshman year. A few things I noticed is that there are a few kids who intentionally act gay to get on the nerves of the few people who are against being gay. If I was gay and came out I think I would be accepted fairly easily. Most of the people don't mind or care and there are a lot of people who openly support gays.
To contrast, the public school I went to for middle school was a very bad environment for anyone who is gay. Any gay tendencies would result in ridicule and bullying.

Hm, I don't actually know. When I was at school there was only one person I knew of which was openly gay and nobody had any problems with him as far as I'm aware, although 99% of his friends were girls. There was a guy that "came out" as a bisexual in like year 9 and there was one or two guys "freaked out" about it, but that was either a phase or attention seeking anyway from him anyway. Other than that, I don't really know. It just wasn't something which most people had a high opinion on, sure some of the guys used homophobic insults towards people they didn't like or as friendly banter with friends i.e. "battyboy" or "faggot" but there was never really any damning homophobia in my school. And I went to a Catholic school, lol.
Wonder.

Maybe like, two? Three? The school is very accepting, we have a GSA Club, some of my friends are in it. The students are more-or-less okay. There is still the whole use of 'gay' and 'fag' as insults, be it towards homosexuals or used synonymous with 'stupid' but I don't think I've ever heard of any hate crimes or really bad goings-on involving LGBT students. They seem to be just as well adjusted as heterosexual students, I think.

Not very common to see openly gay people about at all in school.
There has to be more gay (or even bi) people than there is.

Probably a nine for guys, since quite a few of us can dress a little bit more effeminate (by that I mean wearing clothes other than sports jerseys...ha.) and act a little gay (slapping each others butts or whatever) but any approving of homosexuality or gay rights is a no no. For girls, probably a six. They can sleep in the same bed and act a pretty lesbian, but they would be hung if they were actually homosexual and ridiculed if supported homosexuals.
I go to a christian school on the west coast of the United states. It's sickeningly homophobic. Probably 95% of people there believe being homo, bi, or trans sexual is a sin and "a choice." They use gay synonymously with stupid or weird. They freely use the word fag(got) and are confused or laugh at me when I try to tell them these words are inappropriate and filled with hate.
It is inappropriate for a Christian school to be acting with so much hate. I love the people at my school and it kills me daily to know they are so filled with hate. For those of you on these forums who are gay lesbian bi or trans, know that there are plenty of Christians who don't act this way, who believe god loves you and accepts you into his kingdom regardless of sexuality.

It depends. For girls, like a 2. Guys think it's hot. I don't have anything against it, but you shouldn't view it as hot cause it's not like they are gonna make out for you... And for guys, like a 9. "Gay" is used as a synonym for stupid, which disgusts me. And barely anyone talks to the few open guys. I feel really bad, and when I try to talk to them everyone attacks me for being gay, and I'm not, so it's kind awful.

Definitely a ten.
People in my school use the word 'gay' when ever something they dont like happens. like when they get extra homework or something.
"oh, Gay."
Kind of like how people use the word 'sad' or 'stink'.
I dont know of anyone gay at my school, but that's probably because they feel the need to hide it.

In mine a 1 for girls and a 8 for boys. We have lots of openly gay girls and people are fine with it but I don't think many boys are out of the closet or there just arnt many and Im not sure people would act the same with gay boys as they do girls.
I mean the boys call each other gay as an insult and are pretty homophobic and even if a boy has a high voice or way they act or dress is a little weird people always call them gay when they're bot, hmm yeah gay boys would not go down to well in my school.

Although the country where I live, Singapore, is VERY homophobic (It's illegal for gay people to live here!) the school I go to is fine with it, actually I think the LGBTQ kids are more popular because of it, even the guys.

Back in my High School life I heard numerous teacher call male students "faggots" "panzies" "fairy fuckers" "faries" "poofters" and so on.... Usually it was the teachers for PDHPE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, PDHPE is the Australian version"Gym Class" but we had theory one period then the next time we have that class we do practical which is all the physical stuff). I also witnessed one of the PDHPE teachers who is known for teasing the gay students call one lesbian student a "disgusting dyke" and told her that over weight and ugly girls should not be able to be lesbians. I approached the teacher and defended this girl and asked him if he thought homosexuality is okay? His reply was "If you're a guy, then no, but for girls it's fine, what kind of guy wouldn't love two hot lesbians? A faggot obviously." I was shocked.... I told him to go fuck himself and I told him that he can't speak to students like that, I told him if he did it again that i'd take him around the back of the oval (soccer/football frield) and teach him a lesson, he told me he's reporting me for threatening him (would have resulted in me being suspended/expelled from the school). Anyway I told him the who class was witness to what he said to (I won't mention her name) and that if he reported me for threatening him we'd all report him fro what he said and he'd lose his job and surprisingly the whole class backed me up... The girl thanked me later, even now that i'm out of school we still chat on Facebook alot. So i'd rate the High School I attended at around a 10 (being the worst).

Pretty good. I mean like the people who are out and open most of the people are VERY accepting. We even have a cross dresser. But i mean there are some people who like make fun of them. But my school is SOOOO big that its not really that hard to avoid anhone so that is probs the main reason. FOr many of the gay people unless they are like "gay acting people".. Many people may not know they are gay!

Maybe a 4, because there are people who accept it perfectly and people who frown upon it, but just mock quietly. To my awareness, there haven't been any acts of bullying towards someone due to his/her sexuality.
I decided to rate it with a 4 because there are still a lot of people who dislike homossexuals/bissexuals, more than there should be in this day and age. And the stupid comments are just childish.

I go to an all guys catholic school so it is 7-8. If it is obvious ur gay then its fine but if it is a shocker to everyone its social suicide. Sounds weird but it is tru. i think it is because if they no ur gay then they r used to it but if they are not they think you like them and are scared that everything they ever did with the person was a lie. Im not gay (im either bi or str8, i like girls emotionally and physically but only like guys physically, dont no y) i just no because i no guys who r. Sad to admit but i was homophobic for a short period of time when my friend said he was gay because we did things together, not sexually, but i was afraid he liked me and i did not like him back. But i am not homophobic anymore!

Probably a 5. It is really more about the individual than the hate. There is a specific kid who wants attention and it seems like he acts gay in order to receive it. Really gives gays a bad name. Going around telling people how he f'ed guys that he obviously didn't and that are straight leads to a bunch of crap, and considering that this is Georgia.... Yeah.

even though were one of the gay capitals ( Sydney )
So not true, might be in your area but don't tarnish all of Australians with the same brush. Umm my first school was a 6, a few gays but they were outcasted. School now is probably a 2, plenty of gay/bi guys, sex-ed is catered to both gays and straights and gay couples are treated the same as straight.

Homophobia: 6.
Discrimination and bullying: 1.
The homophobia's there, but gays are typically pretty popular here. It seems to me that most people look past it, or at least set aside our differences. I know the homophobia is there because everyday I hear "that's gay" or "way to be a fag," and even though it's not targeted AT LGBT people like bullying, it shows the underlying stigmas attached to homosexuality.
I'm gay and have experienced no bull over it. We have a gay-straight alliance at my school. Generally people (here in the moun'ns) know better than to judge someone for their sexuality. Then of course there are the "too cool for fags" kids who say derogatory things, but they don't have much credibility here.

I would say about 3 or 4. It seems like a lot of the people at my school are bisexual, mostly the girls. I don't think anyone really cares what you are. But there are the occasional idiotic guys who like to make fun of the girls who aren't straight, just because they think it's funny and want to find a way to insult them.

Probably about a one or two really, im from Scotland and although there's alot of predjudice toward many other things, homsexuality is not one. Oneof the most popular girls in our school is a lesbian, and one of the most well respected boy's is gay. We're pretty open minded.

I'd say 1, my school would joke about it a lot, but definitely not in a mean or condescending way and everyone was incredibly accepting of it. I'm pretty sure the prom king a couple years ago was gay, and on the basketball team, he was pretty popular. So yeah, not an issue at all at my old high school. People were really open about it.

When I first came out 3 years ago, I'd have said maybe 4, but to be honest since I started this year with my boyfriend its made me realise these days its definitely a zero. We can do anything a straight couple can do, and get no problems. I'd say this is because things have actually improved simply because more and more kids are coming out all the time, some of the out kids are very popular and so it would probably now be social suicide to be homophobic if anything.
