i am a self harmer, i have been fr 6 years now, my councellor and psyciatrist know i do it, but they have never asked me to stop, or offered help to help me stop, i dont want to stop either, its something that keeps me reasonably sane, my doctor said if its not a problem to me then i dont need to worry about it....what do u lot think....im not embarrassed to talk about this, but i dont show a soul..

how bad is your self harm issue.
do you cut/scratch etc?
i recommend getting a new docter, because any form of self harm is bad.
and will only lead to more pain then your in.
i really dont know why a docter would say that.
but i incourage you to stop.
or find a docter to help you stop.
and we're always here for ya' at VT.
hope everything works out.

It surprises me that a doctor would say something like that. What my boyfriend always says when I try to argue that it's ok as long as it doesn't get out of hand and I put my life in danger etc. is that it's the mentality that counts, and even if someone doesn't self-harm, but just wants to, they still have a problem.

I don't fully believe this (when he starts it, I just waaave and smile, boys, wave and smile!), but it sounds like something I would expect from a doctor!

What's a psychological disorder? Having a demon take over your body? And by most people, do you mean people in general, or people that self-harm? I know I don't have any demons;) Sorry if I'm being stupid, but your post was just a little unclear to me. Would you mind clarifying a little for those of us that are a bit slow?:P

Dude... Why are you repeting so many times that you don't show anyone? Are you afraid that people are gonna accuse you of being an attention whore or something? Don't worry about it, from what I've seen around here (even though I'm as new as you so..) people aren't like that.:)

I didn't want everyone to know but a friend of mine found out and told the biggest gossips in our year. So within two days the whole year knew.

I think its disgraceful that your doctor said that. Can you change and get a new one?

it was a school nurse who told me that if its not a probem to me, them its not realy a problem, my doctor says nothing about it...and my therapist and psyciatrist says nothing...should they be doing something? if so, what?

Ah. School nurses. I had one of those see my scars when I was vaccinated against something or other, and she never brought it up. Even though stuff like that is supposedly one of the main things they are supposed to look out for. I was pretty relieved, but I can see that it must be frustrating if you are looking for help. If this is a problem for you, you have voiced this, and they still won't take you seriously, I would definitely change therapists. You shouldn't have to put up with them not taking you seriously. I could always be that they see the self-harm as more of a symptom and they're trying to treat what's behind it instead of the actual harming or something, I don't know, I'm no therapist, but it seems weird that they won't even mention it.
