Trim it, it's way better. I think it looks a lot better when it's trimmed. When it's shaved, I'm kinda creeped out and when it's a forest, I find it very unattractive. Trimming is the way to go.

Well, I always shave myself, considering it facilitates things. And, but this may be wrong, it looks a bit bigger when I shave. ^_^
As for your situation, it depends on personal preference. As I said, some people prefer to shave, some people don't. Perhaps you should simply try it, and if you don't like it, don't shave again. ^_^

Some Vaseline and other skin ointment can help (don't get preoccupied when applying!), as well as a proper sensitive skin post shave balm can help. I trim mine due to preference but I have shaved a few times and these seemed to work, especially the post shave balm.

From my experience, shaving it all off, it didn't itch much. But I like trimming, but I also like it grown out. Shaving it all off makes it look like a baby's bottom.

I shaved last year for a couple of months. I don't like body hair, but I decided I looked kind of silly totally bald down there. Now I trip short and like it that way. Its not unruly looking but everyone knows that I have really hit puberty!
