If you do not subscribe to any religion, what happens when you die, because if you have no belief, you cannot accept there is a heaven or hell?

Well I'm an agnostic and my believe is that there is some form of reincarnation

I believe that my soul carries on to another vessel some time after I die, or that I start my life in another dimension.

I will go to the same realm when I was not born yet -- the non-existence.

Honestly...no one knows. The whole "heaven/hell" thing is blegh to me.. I love to think that there is some kind of after-life... (NOT heaven/hell) but for me, it's just reassurence... who knows?

I don't believe in an afterlife for the same reason that I reject religion. Our conscious minds simply ceases to function - nobody may be able to grasp how it 'feels' or what it's 'like', but that doesn't mean it isn't true.

Nothing happens after you die. People convince themselves that something does because they are scared of death, scared of the unknown. When you're alive, your brain, your consciousness, is what you are using to think. When you die your brain doesn't get the energy and blood it needs to work, which means it ceases to be able to form thoughts. You (which is essentially your mind) will simply stop being.

Considering you can't perceive anything after you die, it would be impossible to describe what happens. Like Faris said, the exact same thing before you were born. Nothing.

Or when you are unconscious or in a state of dreamless sleep. Yes, I think I get what you're on about.

Why do you associate nothingness with black?

i dont believe in souls so when you die you stop existing nothing happens there is no heaven or hell. i can accept reincarnation as the reuse of your bodies nutrients in another organism but since there is no soul "you" arent there.

You'll rot in the ground regardless of what you believe.

Nothing includes an absence of light. When there is no light, all one can see is black.

Nothing is nothing, you can't associate it with a colour, or a lack thereof. If your conscious is nothing, you don't see a lack of light - you see nothing.

You asked why it was that people (deadpie in this instance) made this connection, not whether I thought it was a valid connection or not.

You cease to exist. You rot. I don't know for sure. No dead person has ever told us what it is like to be dead. but I don't believe in "heaven" and "hell".

Light is an actual physical entity. It is energy given off by some reaction somewhere. Without light, we only see black. Since light cannot exist in nothing (because it is something), nothingness is thus black.

I believe that we simply shift consciousness to a parallel universe. There are an infinite number of parallel universes (i.e the multiverse theory). Either that or our conscious mind disappears and we reincarnate in the universe.

That's assuming that 'nothingness' is describing only the absence of light and space. Surely nothingness is much more than that - it's the absence of anything whatsoever, including yourself and your ability to observe it. That's why it's nothing. I don't believe it's black.

Well I disagree with most of you,you don't cease to exist.I mean technically you are still here....be it you're rotting >.> .But most people who aren't "subscribed to a religion" don't believe there is anything after death.I for one am agnostic, and I think my mind will keep existing, but I think our knowledge and info is who we're ,it's up to us to pass it or keep it.But I don't really consider it that I'm dying, just changing "form"(dirt lol).

Hmm...I believe I will make some bugs very happy and recycle back into the earth...somehow...
Of course I don't believe in heaven or hell, but I guess it'd be nice if heaven were true.

Black sounds and looks like the color that would represent nothingness. I've died before and I didn't have any heavenly strange whatever experience. I didn't recall anything, so I would think it's like some of the dreams I have where nothing happens at all, where it's just everything being black with me not thinking about literally anything, so it's a realm of unconscious nothing. Death literally is nothing. Black is very much of a void and shapes downwards if you look down a tunnel or it fades when you move away from a light.

I would say it would be darker than black, but I have no color that does such justice.

Seeing as how if you don't exist you wouldn't be able to be able to perceive your nonexistence, I'd say after you die, your brain ceases to function and whatever mind had come along as a result of the functioning of a fist-sized clump of brain cells is gone forever, leaving you with nothing. Absolute nothing.

However, it could be interesting what happens next. I'd take interesting over eternal paradise any day.

I agree with everyone else here. When you die you will perceive nothing. Once you stop breathing and your heart stops beating your consciousness and everything non physical that makes you who you are will cease to exist. It's a very hard thing to comprehend complete nothingness. We will never know what it's like, because we won't exist, it will be like before we were born, there was abosultely nothing of us in existence. This is why death is such a sad thing that we inately fear.
The closest thing we can experience to death is been knocked unconcious. You could be out for days, but when you wake up it's like none of that time exists.

If there does happen to be a heaven or Afterlife then I will be pleasantly surprised, but my logical Brain does not let me believe this.
