I'm having a hard time with macro photography. No matter what I make the aperture on my camera, both the background and foreground are blurry and out of focus. Does anybody have any tips?

That would help.
Also, are you using a tripod or keeping your camera steady?

I have a GE x500 pro series
22mm wide angle lens
The aperture range is only f/3.0 to f/5.2, which I think is the problem. :/
I wanted to get a better camera, but my family is almost dirt poor and were on a budget, this was the cheapest camera I could get thats decent.

Did you enabled the macro option?

This happened to me as well. I find that not using the zoom helps. Just hold it as close as you can to the macro object. Then half-hold the clicky button for a while until the focus is what you want. It may take a while. Then when you get it, clicky click :)

What about having the camera farther away from the subject, and then zooming in to get it the desired distance from you instead of going up close to it?

Once you've got your foreground or background in focus (If it's a P&S which is what it sounds like), don't half-press the shutter and then move the camera or the subject as the focus usually locks.
Also, if you need more depth of field, go into Photoshop, enter quick mask, drag a gradient and render lens blur on it. Really effective & cheap if you're low on good DOF gear :D
