View Full Version : Prohibiting Repeated Answers

I brought this up before, just not in an official suggestion and it got some buzz and died.

My thing is this, in the Virtual Teen HQ section all we see is one answer, repeated again, and again, and again. Why do other members feel the need to obsessively restate the same thing over and over as if it weren't already sufficient the first time? However, I do understand an answer may be wrong. If this is the case, then replying with the correct answer is the obvious duty. I know people on here are stupid, trust me I get it, but do we really have to drill it in their heads like manic teachers? "How to PM?" "Get 100 posts" "Get 100 posts" "Get 100 posts" "Get 100 posts" "Get 100 posts" "Get 100 posts" "Get 100 posts" "Get 100 posts" "Get 100 posts" "Get 100 posts" "Get 100 posts" "OH FUCKING KAY! ;_;"

I was also told the mods used to actually enforce this to an extent, why did it die?

----------------Each is independent from the other. v ^

Also, to prevent questions from popping up or being poorly explained I think there should be a more formal method of answering a question. If you can provide a link to the Rules/FAQ or a prior thread then you should. This allows for the member to gain a more in depth look at how to solve their question.

I agree with this. once an answer is given, checked that it's 100% correct, the OP can mark the thread as "solved" when he or she believes the question has been answered. this will automatically lock it. and any repeated answer should be removed

Have to agree and sent you a rep point for such an amazing suggestion.

I agree 100% with this. I am getting sick of seeing so many of the same questions being asked over and over and over again.

I think half the trouble, many of us are too lazy to look for another thread that is exactly the same.

actually, this thread is about repeated answers, not questions. but I also am sick of seeing the same questions as well

I also support this notion.

I believe people just repeat an answer for that extra +1 in post count primarily.

Yeah, once in my own thread I said time to stop posing, and they didn't. I have to agree with this rule.

Some people really are giving a similar view to others, but it usually has a variation (and is typically more than two lines if they are not spamming) so it is okay in rare instances where the same post wont build up.

EDIT: Guess if this passes we will need new mods to pick up some slack?

I second the notion. I really thing that this is a wonderful possibility.

People read questions. They see other people only get links and small words. They may be more compelled to research the answer more than just ask and get a blunt, direct answer.

I agree as well. It is ridiculous.

I have email subscriptions to threads that I post in enabled, and I read every one, and there is one specific thread that was loosely based on, let's say a vacation and a specific location that the OP is going to. For the past[edit] month or so the thread has been getting exact same 2-3 words replies to it consistently.
^Thats just one example.

This is particularly for the VTHQ. So I feel your example is out of place, as repeated answers within other sections of the forum could give additional insight to a situation or problem.

I do agree that 2-3 word replies are ridiculous in any section of the forum. You can not give advice in three words. Not anything exceptional anyway.
Especially The Art Room. Critique or Comment on the damn work. "Cool." "It looks good." and "Looks cool." Are not adequate replies to art.

Honestly, it died possibly because there's only Admins who can enforce this rule and they are not around as often (Which is why bots posts stay in here longer). Since us Mods don't have access to HQ, we can't enforce that and lock the threads.

Sometimes people do not know how to do something and I get that but I think using the search engine thing to look for old questions to answer one of these questions would be a good idea

We need to search more before we ask

Also search more for the p101 questions it would be much easier than having 25 threads of the same thing

Global Moderators do exist as well.

The entire set of replies for questions inside the puberty section is annoying. Especially in a topic which is answered and there is around ten replies saying the same answer. It gets very fuken annoying to be honest.

There was this rule that I was told when I was moderating P101, we weren't allowed to lock or move repeatedly asked questions, because everyone is allowed to ask questions to get help.

I think this would be more viable if it were just in the HQ.

So ten different people or even more can reply with the same answer in each topic? If I owned this site things would be very strict.

Rules are in place, but being strict may not always be the way to go at things.
Be it moderation or administration, there are always grey areas , especially when it comes to the online committee.

When should certain guide lines be enforced harder, while at times matters can be allowed to slide provided it's threading in the right direction.

People generally can't be bothered to read or use the search function to find the answers to their questions.
Guess that's always the case most of the time.

This is happening in many forums with people way our age, what more on VT.

Obviously there are. And once again, these people aren't always on to catch the repeated answers.

Again, everyone misses the point.

This thread is not about repeated question it's about repeated answers.
Fuck.

I got the point, didn't mean to type Questions. That would mean a Mod would have to be here all the time to lock a question once it's been asked and an Answer is given. There aren't enough Admins or Globals on to do so...

No, it doesn't.
Mods aren't present 24/7 in any other section of the forum to catch say a reported post or even an unreported post. This would be no exception.

You make a rule. You enforce the rule.
So long as you enforce it, not as many people will repeatedly restate the same thing to a single question. Cut back on on people breaking the rule, cut back on moderation duties. But it's just that, mods would have to enforce it.

then we should allow the OP to mark the thread as solved, and therefore the thread is locked automatically. that would require a modification I think

It would require a mod. Too much hassle.

Table the last motion for the time being and I bring up the above listed.

I don't think we'll be seeing many more mods added to the site now that Anthony has retired. Not to say the current administration isn't capable, I just don't see it being likely.

I think for p101 theres no point and 9/10 times there is only on answer and a few that circle round to this answer. I see it as annoying but i think it help for reasurance

Ok right well if it is just for VT HQ then there is no point. it would be enforced all over the forums therefor efecting everyone. This is why I was mentioning p101 as an example, VT HQ post are really for new members and I have no issue with repeating the same answer sure it is annoying but hey. It rasies my post count, I find this no big deal, Other than mods wasting there time giving out infraction points or warnings, I see this being not high on the list of things to change/deal with on VT

Here's how we could get rid of repeated posts in VT HQ:

Get rid of post count in the HQ.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing this around the forum, but it's too "special" to some people.
