Are you a diabetic or do you think you will be eg your parents are?

I am a type 2 got put straight on the insulin but slowly coming off it and hopefully sometime soon will just be taking metformin.

Got diagnosed around a month or so ago and so far my diabetic lady I see is very happy with the results as I went into hospital with 49 on my blood count but it's come right down to under 8 most days.

I was playing football (soccer) wiv me mates two days ago, and woke up in hospital. I am being tested in the next 30 mins, but doc says I have Type 1 which means I will have to inject 3 times a day!

VERY WORRIED

Oh wow! I'm sorry dude. =/ I know how difficult and annoying it is having to inject yourself if you are one. Been doing it two times a day for a good month and a bit. And I'm very scared of needles. Like I almost went into a panic attack when I had my blood tests. Which was not good for coma level.

Avatar100/400, that is not the sort of encouragement I need, (I have almost died twice) lol.

I have stopped crying now, but still finding it hard to accept. How do you live with it? What are the no no's, do you ever get used to the needle (it hurts like hell!), where do you inject?

I have a zillion questions, and no answers

I'll include some links for you that've helped me out a lot Kyle.

Injection points (http://www.bd.com/us/diabetes/page.aspx?cat=7001&id=7261) vary, theres quite a few you can use. The main two are the outer thigh and the side of the abdomen. The back of the upper arms and the lower back/buttocks area are hard to get to but are common places other people can inject insulin if you can't do it yourself. Its gonna take a while to get used to, especially with the stigma of needles but it depends how scared of them you are and how often you've had them before.

How people live with it (http://www.bd.com/us/diabetes/page.aspx?cat=7001&id=7293) will vary. Your diet is going to need to be changed, as are your exercise habits. I've kept myself under a strict diet which I control based on what i do that day. How much and what i eat depends on how much exercise etc I've done that day. It also depends on your weight and fitness so you're gonna need to base your own lifestyle on your doctors recommendations.

The no no's are simple and mostly common sense, cut down the sugar, stick within your diet plans and be careful with alcohol etc.

If theres anymore you'd like to know or need help with I'm happy to help as said :) Read through the linked site and the side pages, its helped me a lot.

You get used to it, it toughens up a little bit but there's hell to pay when you do it in the wrong place :P

here in the states, 49 is incredibly low. you want a range between 80-120 here.

It's bleed quite a bit once. I thought I was gonna die =/

I'm lucky I'll be taken off it in a few months or even less. But I feel sad for the ones that are on it their whole life. I'm 19, everyone else got it when they were way younger.

ATM my mum is injecting me in the BUM!!

Going to hospital on Monday, for the specialist nurse to show me how to inject myself. After having a long chat wiv one o my m8s on VT last night, I have decided there is nowt I can do about it now.

Its going to be hard to cut down on the sweeties, and I only drink sugar free drinks anyhow.

Any idea how it has started now? I have had no symptoms like drinking loads and peeing lots, and AFAIK, no one in my family has it

I had to remove energy drinks altogether and they were like... my life. </3>

And ouch your bum? Usually it would go in the tummy. Well that is where I have to put mine. It isn't as sore as for example the arm but it is sore enough. I still cannot stand blood tests and would rather be slashed by Jason Voorhees than have a blood test. I have a massive needle phobia. =/

And your symptoms are weird. Mind you I had diabetes for around a good couple of months without knowing. I only got checked out because I pissed so much after I drunk. But if I wasn't doing that I may still not know that I am one.

Why are my symptoms weird? My sugar levels are very low, dont know the scale you use, but "normal" here is between 4.5 and 7.0.

My sugar level was 0.4 when I was taken to hospital. Very low indeed!

I mean they're weird as you had none. And that is the same here. Usually I get 4+ and sometimes need to have something with sugar in. But haven't really got 'major' shakes. Just felt a bit shaky inside.

I have to inject in my tummy. And it just happens to be a really sensitive area.

I do it on my side, which can be quite sensitive from time to time.

Not really a big deal to me. I mean, yeah it's life threatening and I'm always at risk for kidney failure because of this and drug use, but I'm not bothered by it at all. Oh, and I'm type one.

My bro is Type 1, he has a wireless pump for his insulin, life is actually very normal. Years ago when he was on the pen I'm pretty sure he took one type of insulin for meals and a different one at night, life wasn't very dramatic after the first month since we were forced to learn how to inject by ourselves (yeah our local hospital doesn't know what type 1 is). You get used to it, we actually had a minor diet change (we eat healthy as hell) and since he's also celiac, we were well adjusted for that.

If you know how to live the lifestyle, it'll get easier.

Also, the stomach was a preferred place for my brother when he was on the pen.

Just got back from hospital. (Good job I remembered to wear boxers today:eek:)

I was given 2 half measures of insulin, one in the thigh, and one in the belly, just so I can pick which one is best for me. I can tell you, the thigh and belly are far LESS painfull than in the bum!

It feels like a sting from an insect, and I can live with that! My sugar levels are averaging 4.5 now, and they are very pleased. So fingers crossed, life can get back to normal. Nurse told me that I have to take control of the diabetis, and not let diabetis take control of me, did not understand it, but wanted to get away quick, so if anyone has any more advice, I am ready to take it.

Thanks all

What she meant was you need to change your habits to control Diabetes before it starts to control you. Making you ill etc. You'll need to change your dietary habits but only with the help from a doctor. Dont underestimate diabetes, its a complete bitch to get control of if you let it go even the slightest

How long is it, before my body get used to the insulin? I am still having mild hypo's (2.5 - 3.0), but not needing to go to hospital, just have a jam sandwich and a cup of tea with sugar in to get levels back up.
