I...don't think so. Indie rock has a distinctive sound to it. Just because it isn't underground doesn't mean it's indie. There are numerous genres that are underground that aren't indie.

Indie music is not a genre. Indie is a label, short for independent. Meaning they're not signed to any music company.

So... there's no REAL indie music, really. If it's indie it's just that, really... indie. It just is.

Partially, I agree. But I do agree with Jake when he says indie rock has a distinctive sound to it.

It's definitely turned into a genre.

Indie music isn't a genre - however, there are some genres / subgenres with the term indie used in them, and like Jake said they have their own distinctive sound to them.

I would definitely say that it has developed into a genre

Indie was mostly term given to those early alternative rock bands that did not assign to a major label.

These bands were mostly belong to the Psychedelic and Shoegaze scene. But now, it has become a genre of its own, distinct from psychedelic or shoegaze.
