LONDON (Reuters) - Astronomers have spotted an exotic planet that seems to be made of diamond racing around a tiny star in our galactic backyard.
The new planet is far denser than any other known so far and consists largely of carbon. Because it is so dense, scientists calculate the carbon must be crystalline, so a large part of this strange world will effectively be diamond.

"The evolutionary history and amazing density of the planet all suggest it is comprised of carbon -- i.e. a massive diamond orbiting a neutron star every two hours in an orbit so tight it would fit inside our own Sun," said Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne.

Lying 4,000 light years away, or around an eighth of the way toward the center of the Milky Way from the Earth, the planet is probably the remnant of a once-massive star that has lost its outer layers to the so-called pulsar star it orbits.
Pulsars are tiny, dead neutron stars that are only around 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) in diameter and spin hundreds of times a second, emitting beams of radiation.

In the case of pulsar J1719-1438, the beams regularly sweep the Earth and have been monitored by telescopes in Australia, Britain and Hawaii, allowing astronomers to detect modulations due to the gravitational pull of its unseen companion planet.

The measurements suggest the planet, which orbits its star every two hours and 10 minutes, has slightly more mass than Jupiter but is 20 times as dense, Bailes and colleagues reported in the journal Science on Thursday.
In addition to carbon, the new planet is also likely to contain oxygen, which may be more prevalent at the surface and is probably increasingly rare toward the carbon-rich center.

Its high density suggests the lighter elements of hydrogen and helium, which are the main constituents of gas giants like Jupiter, are not present.
Just what this weird diamond world is actually like close up, however, is a mystery.

"In terms of what it would look like, I don't know I could even speculate," said Ben Stappers of the University of Manchester. "I don't imagine that a picture of a very shiny object is what we're looking at here."

And wouldn't it be great to live there :D

No, but it would be great if the scientists can find a way to travel there and maybe over time figure out a way to mine the diamonds, and maybe explore the planet for a bit. c:

well if its 4000 light years away it might not even exist anymore... and it would suck if we sent people there only for them to get there and be like "WTF whered it go?"

Where would we get that technolgy :/

Its orbiting a star, if the heat don't get you you'd end up running out of air or dying of skin cancer.

Probably the most expensive diamonds ever?

Diamonds don't stay diamond forever. They turn into black rocks. But anyway, it's a nice find.

Its orbiting a star

A small point: so are we. But we can't get there. Even if we had technology to build space transport which could travel at the speed of light, the occupants would be dead thousands of years before arrival, any robots would be too far from Earth to control, and no current power sources would last that long.

Interesting discovery though.

THE PLANET IS NOW DIAMONDS.

Seriously though, that's very interesting

Sounds cool guess i should invent sublight engines and take a pickaxe and torches. But serously it sounds cool and images available

Was reading this story yesterday or a couple of days ago, would be a good sight to see closer. But given the two hours and 10 minutes orbital period would be too hot.

Think, if we lived there diamond would be worth dirt. Literally.

Getting that planet would be useless....Diamonds would be too common and wouldn't be worth that much

I wouldn't be so sure. If (hypothetically) someone were to mine these diamonds, they'd make the diamonds more valuable as the demand would be extremely high, but the means in which to obtain these diamonds would be quite difficult, ensuring its rarity and, consequently, heighten its value.

Now if we lived on that planet (which is impossible, obviously), then diamonds wouldn't be worth much.
