A shame indeed. He is a great man that changed the world. His letter is as follows:
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
Steve

It could be either due to his health, afterall he was on extended leave, hence it was all pretty much expected.
Tim Cook, has been the acting CEO for quite a while, its likely hes been there to aid this transition.
Neither can we rule out that jobs has be asked to step down. But either way, the share value has plunged by 5% since the annoucement, as investors are afraid of restructuring and corporate instability.
Looks like a bullrun would be in place soon, too bad me aint got no money to do that :(.

I giggled at the headline on most news outlets "Without Jobs, Apple faces challenges"
At first I was like, 'well duh!', then I remembered HIS name is 'Jobs'. :P

steve jobs was diagnosed with terminal cancer months ago. probably liver cancer, given his transplant. a person i know, active in the charitable giving world, was retained earlier this spring to help jobs give away his money. since steve has basically not given a fuck about charity, that meant he was dying - and dying fast. so i expected this entirely.
interested to see if investors have accounted for this outcome as they should have already.

True, it should be part of their projection the moment he took his extended medical.
If he is to will anything to charity, it would be known only much later.
It could be possible that he is flushed out of ideas. So taking the laid back step and enjoying the fruits and out of media scrutiny.
But i still think the plunge in the shares would be a potential bullrun.
Everyone is dumping the shares, but i think they would push it back up with a profit margin.
*nudges* got cash to spare?

it could be, but he had a liver transplant in 2009 (which is highly suggestive of liver cancer that was thought to be limited to the liver, at least for a guy like jobs who was unlikely to be full of hep c or cirrhosis or whatever), and he has hired someone to help him give away his money. the question at this point is what the over/under line in months until death should be.

I think it's because of his health. It does kinda make me sad though. I have a lot of respect for him.
