View Full Version : The deeper you cut, the less it hurts?

For some strange reason, the deeper I cut, the less it hurts. Yeah, it hurts -a lot- afterwards, especially when you shower or if you're like me, you don't have band aids so your skirt just scrapes it when you move or it gets stuck to the blood. But while you're cutting, it doesn't hurt and when the blood starts flowing you're just like "What?? How did that happen? I didn't cut that deep." When it's shallow I feel it though.

Is anyone else like this?

Oh and another question. I don't have bandaids. There is no way I can get them without my mother figuring it out. What do I do? Is it okay to just leave it open? Thanks.

i could be completely wrong, but i believe it has something to do with nerves and nerve endings.

So most of your nerves are at the surface...?

i'm not really sure, but i think so. i think that's why paper cuts hurts so bad.

That makes sense. But why do we cut deeper and deeper if it's all on the surface? I don't know. Somehow the feeling of a blade digging into your flesh helps with relaxation. They look disgusting though.

to be honest this isn't something i can relate to and i don't want to make it seem as if i do. i was born with addictions to drugs, so i understand addiction, but not this particular addiction.

Oh haha sorry about that. I thought everyone on here did. Thanks for posting though and the nerves being on the surface makes sense. Thank you :) Good luck with the drug addiction. I hope you'll get better and recover soon.

one of my foster siblings has been struggling with "cutting". or rather, "self harm", so i'm trying to learn more about it.

Hey Z, kai is right in the sense that deeper hurts less because you sever the nerve endings if you go deep enough. it will hurt more later though as it repairs. Leaving a cut open is EXTREMELY dangerous expecially with what your cutting with or if you use the same object over and over. If you do end up cutting take a shower and clean it thoroughly. If you can't get bandaids in the house idk why but an Ace-bandage may be easier to sneak in which is like a turnaquiet. its like a long cloth you wrap around the area. it keeps junk out and puts pressure on it. since they can be rolled up in a small wad you could sneak one in easy

The first time I cut, it was the deepest. I was really, really angry at myself and took my my pocket knife and just slashed at my arm. I really didn't know how deep it was until it started bleeding and I just looked at it like... what. How did I do that?

I never really experienced that after.. I cut for it to hurt, so I focus on how much it hurts.

I find it hurts more when I cut deep...but maybe this is more of a mental thing because I don't like cutting deep because of the scars...

I deffinitely wouldn't recommend leaving it open so dirt can get in, you wouldn't want to have your mom find out because it got infected. I don't want it to sound as though I am encouraging you to cut, but next time you feel as though you really need to, cut your finger and go and ask your mom for a band aid, acting as though it was an accident. Then if you don't have any you could just say 'we should really keep a box in the house just in case'.

Anna you put "I deffinitely would reccomend leaving it open so dirt can get in" may wanna change that ^^
Also Z just remember only person that matters is you. if your happy with yourself you shouldnt feel the need to harm your amazing body

If anything the scars stop me from cutting so deep because I really hate them. But I have before and I agree it doesn't seem to hurt at the time, but it hurts afterwards. It must be something to do with nerves. Because if you touch a hot pan you pull away straight away, it's your body's instant reaction. So maybe there are more on the surface of your skin to keep you safe? I'm not really sure.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I know i shouldn't leave it open but I really have no choice. I'm one of those effing rich kids with chauffeurs and maids and I can't just go buying gigantic band aids. My mother watches me like a hawk. I cut too big to get a small plaster thingy. Hell I don't even know if band aids come this big.

Once again, thanks so much for all the replies and yes, it does hurt a lot later. I'm having a real hard time walking cause it tears the cuts and showering is ppaaiinnfuull. This is stupid. It's hurting when I don't need it to hurt. It isn't even the type of pain I need.

Thank you once again.

Love,
Faith and Trust

I got a huge cut in my finger, it didn't hurt a bit. It was an accident and I had to go to the hospital and get four stitches... point is, it didn't hurt. I was told it was adrenaline.

Adrenaline? I didn't feel anything when I cut. It was more like "Oh shiz how the hell do I stop the bleeding? My mother's going to eat my face"

Yeah, basically what happened here. Anyways adrenaline is supposed to make it so you cant feel severe injuries.

I'm the same, when I cut deep it doesn't hurt as much. I don't use bandaids, or anything when I cut deep.

so out of curiosity, when you cut, but have gotten to the point you don't feel anything anymore, why do you continue cutting? is it impulse or what?

when I carved XII twice in my arm (couldn't see the first wasn't deep enough) it didn't hurt until the wind from my fan hit it, it was more annoying than painful though. The cutting isn't half as bad as the itchy scars.

@Kai
For me it's more like a punishment and out of anger and hatred. I do it to punish myself or when I think I'm a useless fat ugly bastard. Or when I hate my mother so bad I wanna pour gasoline on her head or set it on fire, same with my sperm donor. So I cut myself instead of them. Don't wanna get arrested or killed or tortured to death by my sperm donor and carrier.

@Everyone else
Thanks for the replies. Really appreciate it. And yeah, I agree. It hurts afterwards. Scars look okay but the cuts are -ugly-. I can see my fat and flesh and eewww. Gross. But I do it anyway. I'm praying it doesn't get infected.

Most of our nerves are at the top of our skin like the others said.U could try cleaning ur cuts with some water than drying the area if u cut before bed wash it when u brush ur teath or before school wash it in the bathrooms thats my suggestion so u dont get a infection.Hope i helped

Actually yea. I tend to feel it less the ddeeper i go. And on the whole bandaid thing, i find that superglue works really well to hold it closed. Actually a trick my mom showed me back before i started cutting.

i still cut as wen i see blood coming out of me it calms me down...kinda like a lil bit of pain leaving...jus a way of relaxing/calming down wen fags cant do it, so basically out of habit

I think, maybe you don't feel it the deeper you cut because you get the surge of adrenalin and endorphins which numbs you to it.
But i'm just speculating? i dunno if anyone can confirm.

More or less same for me. I don't know, I havn't gone deep deep, but when I was cutting deep I didn't feel it that much and I don't remember it hurting much after either, but it was like two years ago so I could be dead wrong about the last part. But yea I think it's nerve endings being at the top of the skin and everything.
